José the Bronx Rican takes us into the realm (get it?) of hip-hop/r&b with this slick joint that he put the finishing touches on while ALSO working on the album's official trailer and bonus video assets:

"Nothing deeper than an electronic R&B "confection," which I thought suited a character theme belonging to Relm, and which could use more rep on OCR. Forged from about a decade of various genre influences, with all the trappings I thought appropriate."

Relm's theme works surprisingly well in the genre, and José gets extra bonus challenge points for taking the whole thing into a minor key @ 1'38" - did NOT see that coming, but so very interesting & refreshing. Unexpected modulation achievement unlocked!! The EP soloing that highlights the major-key reprise and helps close out the mix is pretty damn sweet, too. Andy writes:

"In addition to putting together the fantastic video trailer for this (as well as most OCR projects), José decided to take on the Relm theme as well. It's great to see some R&B love on this project, and José manages to use his R&B pop sensibilities to create a silky smooth take on the song that's reminiscent of some of the classic radio hits of the early 2000's. The instruments work great, and the track as a whole definitely adds some unique flavor to the project."

Classic JBR action is always a good thing, as I've been a fan of every mix he's put out since debuting back in 2004. In this case I'd never heard Relm done in this style, which was a surprise to begin with, and then the key modulation added some extra panache to the execution. Very cool, very funky, and bringing something quite distinct to Balance and Ruin, 'Pure Essence' is a sweet jam with some interesting tricks up its sleeve and plenty of style & attitude!

This is really cool. One of the standout tracks of Balance and Ruin for me, if not my favorite. It made me imagine a full-grown Relm stylishly walking into the room when I first heard it. :razz:

Nice RB hip hop going on in here. Loved the switching of major and minor keys at different points. Smooth beat, great production, all around awesome.

This was an enjoyable take on Relm's Theme. The synth was handled very well throughout the entire track. Nicely done!
