The nightmarish carnival FM funk of the original 'Mystic Cave Zone' from Sonic 2 is some awesome source material, and newcomer PirateCrab (Daniel Woodyer) has metal'd it all up with this aggressive, in-your-face arrangement:
"IT'S DONE! The full swing metal remix of Mystic Cave is DONE! A long, sleepless night of Sonic 2 with no need to wake up in the morning. At about roughly 5AM, it dawned on me that "Mystic Cave" would be a WICKED track to remix. This song has taken me roughly a week to put together, and roughly 2 hours and over 100 takes just to perfect the solo AND create it at the same time. But here it is in it's full entirety to enjoy."
A week doesn't seem to awful long, by my way of thinking, but it was time well spent in any case, as the end result is a tasty treat that intros w/ a speaker effect before breaking full stride into DAT RIFF. Staccato kick pulses accompany shreddage that decks everything out in a full metal jacket, and when that lead comes in @ 1'03", it might just give you clown nightmares. You know, like Stephen King's IT, or Killer Klowns from Outer Space. That sort of mojo. Things stay crunchy even in milk, as the mix takes some time to chug out & get down; while this is definitely metal, I like that Daniel still manages to fit some funk swagger in there. Larry writes:
"After :26, the intro's mostly original writing with cameos of the source tune before hitting the chorus at 1:03, so some impatient people may wonder where the Mystic Cave Zone theme is. Don't worry about it, as the familiar verse finally arrives at 1:21. The rock treatment of the theme itself was fairly straightforward but infused with dirty, gritty energy, and I felt the drum writing added a lot of flavor to the whole package. Daniel's already got some more good stuff waiting in the wings for us, so keep your eyes peeled for PirateCrab. Yarrrrr!!!"
Looking forward to hearing more; this is a rock solid debut that puts a wonderfully rude & cutting metal twist on the funkier source tune, with a creative interpretation that's still easily identifiable once it gets swinging, and pulls no punches throughout. Check it out, and be on the lookout for more from this talented crustacean!

Yes and yes. Thick, yet clean with a nice punch-you-in-the-face quality to it. The drums and guitars are really nicely mixed.

This is brutal. And I love it. Mystic Cave is one of those sourses that can be given a lot of different treatments and they will all work pretty well. And the only minus of this ReMix is its length. It's really short. Short, but sweet.

While I do agree that the first minute is basically one long lead in to the meat that follows afterwords, I enjoyed this one very much. Groovy riffs that can, I'll admit, conjure up images of evil clowns and enough metal to rock a cave, mystic or otherwise, I'd say this is a very strong debut. Looking forward to more from you, PirateCrab.

PirateCrab debuts on International Talk Like A Pirate Day. COINCIDENCE???
THIS.
I had no idea until it actually dawned on me yesterday, I squealed like a little fangirl meeting the celeb of her dreams.
Many thanks for the reviews guys! Dime, in regards to the mix I personally hate this compared to some of my recent work haha. I've got a lot more work in the pipeline however so keep a listen out. You'll probably see me next year on the next pirate day haha.

For something metal, I will say that the first minute doesn't do a whole lot for me, as I get a bit of repetition and the work with the overall structure didn't overwhelm me. But one minute in the mix really kicks up a notch and goes on from there to be a metal version worthy of some of the great Sonic 2 mixes out there - only more hardcore. I think this mix shows promise and potential!

That's a pretty good 7-string guitar you have there. Solid production, and the bass is awesome too.

Normally hate metal-related mixes, but personally I really enjoyed this one. It was probably all the sexy guitar riffs. Nice goin'.
