Chun-Li & C. Viper team up for some damsel-in-your-FACE, girl-on-girl action!!

I THINK I'm still allowed to say that... right? While would-be cultural critics continue an attempted demonization of every possible female game stereotype known to homo sapiens, including lopsided complaints about the practicality of costumes & accusations of objectification that unknowingly resuscitate failed fringe feminism from the 1970's, I'm personally still playing & enjoying fighting games and SOMEHOW managing to respect women at the SAME TIME!! Impressive, eh? How DO I do it?? Not that there aren't plenty of serious gripes & worthwhile critiques being leveled at gaming (as well there should be - long overdue), it's just that it's damn hard to separate the rationally-concerned wheat from the "this bothers me because I don't like it!!" chaff. If you want my personal advice on extricating the two, well... wheat informs, improves, digests, evolves, includes, and avoids the tempting, cheap thrills of unilateral categorization, knee-jerk mob mentality, and intolerance for dissent. Chaff, on the other hand...

But I digress; OA brings us a sweet upbeat treat with an electronic blend of mademoiselles Li & Viper, featuring different staples from different subgenres of EDM, including some dubsteppish bits in the breakdown. He writes:

"This was a really fun experiment to try some different styles in my mixing, mainly heavy synth sidechaining and a less rock style, but still with a lot of my stylistic ideas and executions. My idea was to combine the 2 themes into something that'd be cool to be played at EVO, but also sortof tell a story of a battle, with the themes going back and forth and interjecting motifs. I took special care with the percussion to stay interesting despite the 4 on the floor, and mixed up the beat for the B section of C. Viper's section, and adding a lot of subtle (and some not so subtle) harmonies to keep the repeat sections fresh.

PS. for the breakdown those are indeed taikos, and yes I realize Chun Li is Chinese and not Japanese, but they sound so damn badass they get to stay. :P"

I'm glad he included that PS, because as we all know, the punishment for "Asian Instrumentation Faux Pas" has historically been decapitation; use those shakuhachis wisely... This mix was made for the World Warrior Remix Royale compo that Shariq helmed; very cool to finally be posting some of the excellent entries! OA keeps this mix primarily electronic but incorporates a lot of different ideas & motifs, including the aforementioned Asian instrumentation, for an arrangement that keeps developing & keeps the energy levels high. I think in the end Chun scores a pretty decisive victory, as her pentatonically super-catchy melody is a little more dominant than C.'s, but it's a great fight & a great intertwining of the motifs by any measure. Excellent, enjoyable, & accessible arrangement of SF2 & SF4's violent femmes!
