Arranging the music of one song...

Psycho Crusher (Cristán Escobar Marín) follows up his October, 2012 Wolfenstein 3D debut with this hard rock arrangement of Mass Effect:
"Ahh... the galaxy map music, present in all 3 Mass Effect games. Its recurrent melody always got stuck in my head, so it was only natural for me to make an arrangement of it. It's a heavily layered piece, and I also took a lot of liberties with it. Basically, the rhythmic section after the main melody is a whole new riff which I thought fit pretty well with the rest. I hope you like it! Greetings from Chile!"
With such a synthetic, sci-fi feel, it's cool to see ME's tunes get more of a raw, rock makeover, and Cristán does an excellent job ensuring that the same depth & atmosphere are maintained even in this newer, more organic context. DarkeSword writes:
"In agreement with Deia and Larry. This is a great take on the source. Really personalized; going full-on rock is a great choice, and executed really well. Could really see this on a Mass Effect montage video. Great performances; I thought the drums were a little thin, but no deal-breakers. Really nice dynamics too."
Judges did agree that production was rough around the edges here and there, but that didn't prohibit enjoying the piece & appreciating the arrangement. Palpable corroborates the sentiment:
"There's lots of little things I would improve here, but it's hard to deny that the overall package has a lot going for it. Creative arrangement ideas, expressive performances and sequencing, and a real sick moody vibe. I think Larry's on the money when he says that a few years from now, you'll probably hear all sorts of ways you can improve this, Cristian, but I think you've met our bar. Great job!"
Electric guitar really dominates, here, but the variety of processing makes each part distinct, and there's plenty of dynamic contrast to keep things interesting. Excellent stuff from Psycho Crusher, who successfully strips down Mass Effect's percolating, futuristic textures into something that casts their core in a new light!

Never did planet navigating sound so edgy in the Mass Effect universe. I’m amazed that these guys were able to take a track that is very simple and soothing, and turn it into what we get right here. I especially love that it doesn’t sound strictly rock. Like with the intro and outro, you know what this is (if you’ve played Mass Effect). It’s respectable to the original source, while the artists still managed to make it their own.

Rock that just comes out in full force without being too in your face is a nice change of pace from what I've been hearing lately, and this ReMix sounds like a terrific take on the map to me. Electric guitar carries a lot of power and the flow of the mix sounds natural. Pretty sweet, Psycho Crusher.

I'm going to open that post with a curious statement, but the opening of that mix has a death note feeling for me.
I enjoyed a lot the galactic map in game leaving you with an adventure feeling, and turning the original into a more dynamic song is a nice move.

Damn, this is one hell of an awesome Mass Effect remix, thin drums included. I always thought it'd be cool to find out that the Galaxy Map's music was some sort of folk music/traditional asari tune/something heard throughout the galaxy for centuries, and this feels like a cover by a rock band, maybe comprised of turians or krogans. It's the perfect New Year's present!

For the first time, I'm actually going to disagree with Larry here. The production at 1:20-2:24 is quite solid, and things are well-separated. You can hear all the components of the mix individually if you focus on them, and there aren't discernible buried instruments that I can notice.
The drums are indeed on the slightly weak side, but it isn't that big a deal for me. They're good enough IMO, and the overall production on the whole track up until 3:13 is only a bit problematic.
3:13-3:44 does get very muddy in the low-mids though, that's for sure. I'm surprised that wasn't mentioned. 3:46-4:16 was better, and more serviceable, but 1:20-2:24 was more solid than that.
Still a very well done arrangement, and the production, while problematic, is good enough to me---perhaps "borderline YES" at worst. I like it.
