Arranging the music of one song...

"Magical Sound Shower"

Primary Game: OutRun (Sega , 1986, ARC), music by Hiroshi Kawaguchi

So far the spring season hasn't been particularly warm, at least here on the East Coast of the US of A, but summer is just around the corner, and before you know it, you'll be firing up the Testarossa, putting one arm around your beautiful blonde companion, picking some tunes on your trusty radio, and racing down a six lane freeway in a Californian setting that is suspiciously devoid of any real traffic. Or perhaps you'll just play Outrun, instead; a much more attainable goal. Here to set the mood with an appropriately upbeat rock jam is Magellanic:

"When it comes to arrangement, I'm terrible at planning style and structure. They kinda just.....happen. I throw it all into my DAW and it the music sort of steadily mushes into a mash of my favourite things from different genres. This started off as a dance-styled mix with an electric guitar lead. It just didn't work for me and decided to tip balance of rock and dance more towards rock. The middle solo section is about as skilled as I can perform on guitar. Having neglected my guitar for many years, I'm paying the price, so no guitar wankery but if I could, I so would. Other than that, enjoy as I really enjoyed producing this. Thanks again to Guifrog and especially Dj Mystix, they always manage to point out those little things I miss."

RESUB NOTES: "After looking back on my inital submission the judges were spot on with all their feedback. I almost threw the towel in with this one, but I've given it one last shot. I think that all the previous production concerns have been addressed and hopefully there aren't too many new ones. The direction with this track is to go for a kinda upgraded 80's vibe (hence the fake brass synths).

In terms of arrangement, I've cut out some parts to keep the flow of the track and get rid of the repetition. There is a completely new ending and more personalisation."

Really glad Liam stuck with this one, as:

  1. I love me some Outrun
  2. I love me some "Magical Sound Shower" and...
  3. I love me some EIGHTIES ROCK VIBE

So it's a bit of a trifecta, you see. At just under three minutes, this mix breezes by quickly, giving you enough time to enjoy the wind in your hair but not overstaying its welcome. The ReMixer makes some interesting & fun modifications to the lead melody on guitar solo that help extend the piece & give it structure and which flow very naturally. Diea writes:

"Your take here is a bit on the conservative side in terms of structure and overall style change, but I think there's a ton of personalization and your approach gives it a lot of life. There's quite a bit of energy, as well, which is good to hear, and keeps me interested."

DarkeSword adds:

"That bit with the brass around 1:47 is really killer. It's got a great PlayStation-era Capcom sound, like something straight out of Mega Man Battle & Chase. Great adaptation of the source. Nice guitar performance too. :D Good arrangement. Not ground-breaking but really nice in a straightforward way."

Of course, as something of a Sega fanboy, hearing Outrun's music - even an arrangement - described as having a "Capcom sound" raises my eyebrows a bit, but I feel what Shariq's saying, and this DOES sound like a plausible official arrange version that might have accompanied a re-release of the game on PS1. Great, accessible stuff from Magellanic that doesn't reimagine the source tune per se, but DOES fully embrace the 80's rock aesthetic and puts a different spin on it for some fun in the sun!

YES. I can feel the warmth in the air, around the corner. The breeze- it calls to you- to ME- TO US. Fuck all this indoor shit. Get in your car, put down the windows. AND DRIVE.

So ironic that this was posted yesterday, when it would not stop freaking raining. But yeah, Magical Sound Shower with a nice 80's feel, that's right up my alley. Great production and I can actually hear what DS was talking about with the brass sounding something out of Playstation-Capcom's playbook. Very cool.

Hehe, it was the same for me too. Oddly enough, at times it rained for like 20 seconds, and at times it was pouring. Literally, I was passing through a building, and on one side it was raining, and when I got out the other end, it stopped.

The Lead could've been improved I think. And I appreciate how you improved on the stock EZD/Superior samples.

Other than that radical :nicework:
