First off, we launched our annual fundraiser yesterday and we REALLY need YOUR help supporting us on PATREON - if even a fourth of our userbase contributed a dollar a month, we'd be able to make some truly amazing improvements. For $5 a month you get awesome free music from OverClocked Records. Please consider helping us out!!
Now then... I'm really glad to see AlanGee15 (Alan Garcia) follow up his sweet 2013 debut "Blanka in Brasil" jam, and he maintains a distinct, syncopated & jazzy vibe with this fusion OoT mix:
"Back in Winter of '98, my mom took me to Target to go "shopping." Little did I know she was actually taking me to snag my first Zelda experience on the Nintendo 64 (along with a really shiny strategy guide!). Every minute of music in this game is truly remarkable and I loved singing to every tune. I recently went through some of my favorite tracks with my little sister and noticed a short track titled "Sheik's Theme." I couldn't recall ever paying any mind to the 36-second piece when I played the game.
The original piece consists of a very simple yet beautiful melody all played on harp. What truly makes this piece stand out is the dense, chromatic, walking harmonies going on right in the middle of the root and melody. I knew immediately that I would be using the electric piano (a.k.a. Rhodes) for this remix to keep the fatness of the chords. Alongside the Rhodes would be the traditional harp that Sheik plays along with a flute that takes the melody at the end of the piece. The original piece doesn't necessarily have a solid time signature, so I felt a hip-hop groove would help solidify and give structure to the chords. There also a couple of extra bits of Kondo's goodness in the piece that I hope you all will enjoy. :)
Thank you so much for your time and consideration! I hope you enjoy this remix as much as I enjoyed making it."
REALLY unique groove/timing on this piece that's gonna throw you for a loop on the first listen, and takes some getting used to. I personally love something that colors outside the lines a bit and defies expectations, and I think Vig summed it up nicely:
"The jitter of the groove threw me off bigtime. It does give it personality though. The rhythmic oddity doesn't bother my by the end of the track. The harmony and partwriting in this track are really freakin' solid. Awesome writing. Whether you like the groove or not, this track is tight."
Couldn't have said it better myself; I'll take something that surprises me & makes an unorthodox approach work over something that just sits on autopilot any day of the week and twice on Sunday, personally. I think Zelda fans and folks just looking for an interesting, SMART arrangement will dig what Alan's cooked up, here, and it's a great sequel to his memorable & authentic take on Blanka. Chic groove!

Ah,one of my favorite songs from OoT
I find the groove needs getting used to, seems to change between triplets and straight eights (like timaeus already pointed out), but overall i really like the writing. A cool and unique little ReMix.

Honestly, I really dig this. Maybe not everybody's cup of tea, but I guess I've had a little exposure to music similar to this. My only complaint is it's too short. Love it, want more of it! Great job!

Does not establish enough of a groove for me, but creative nonetheless.

Well, it's a bit odd and the beat of the groove throws me off a little, but considering what was being shot for, I can understand some of the decisions made here. Personally not my favorite mix by you as a matter of taste, but nice work on creating something coherent and put-together with many smaller themes in it.

I have the same feeling. It's got something mellow going on. It's a well arranged track, I'm just not... feeling it. It's great to see that some less-known tracks get remixed and I think this bodes well for an OoT album, it's just that this just isn't my cup of tea. Great work though, remixer!

Great skewing of the original melody, and love the laid-back drum feel!

I can see where it may seem weird for others to hear the groove like that. It's kinda an RnB thing to intentionally be "out of the pocket," where the drums are oddly off, but it can sound cool. I think it was a little weird and sloppy in this song but I see the attempt and honestly I kinda like what's goin' here.

Drum work strongly reminded me of Flying Lotus. It's weird; I don't dislike it at all, but I don't like it a lot either. Usually, I'm never really indifferent about music.

This is so weird. I love the harmonies, but the rhythm is so odd. It's half swing, half normal, almost sounding sloppy, but I was fine with it later on.
