Sole Signal actually created a twin pair of sibling mixes for Portrait of a Plumber, arranging the same theme in two different styles and offering listeners a choice, Laurence Fishburne-style. Of course, in this case we strongly recommend you take BOTH pills.... errr, coins... but for today's flood we're going with BLUE, an upbeat EDM cut:

"This was my first crack at the classic underground theme that has retained that signature bassline back from the NES version. The N64 version developed the theme but gave it a great ambient feel. My version with this remix takes some liberties, namely using the classic bassline often in half time, while devoting sections of the track to each motif from the original. The experimental nature of the remix led me to decide to create another take on the theme, in the track "Find the Red Coin" on this same project."

As a sidenote, Greg is currently running a kickstarter for an upcoming original album, Coming Up Aces, and needs your help. If you dig this mix AND the numerous free VGM arrangements Greg's released over the years, please consider lending him your support! This is a creative re-envisioning of the source tune; if you didn't know it was an arrangement, you wouldn't necessarily "get" how inventive some of the rephrasing & extensions he's made are. While it's an accessible & enjoyable bit o' EDM, there's some smarts going on behind-the-scenes to make that happen, basically. Justin writes:

"Greg is one of those musicians who seemed to come out of nowhere and be instantly awesome and arranging and music production from the get-go. This track features his dance music style for the "Cave Dungeon" theme. With big beats and some classic synth work, he makes this minimalist original track shine with an adrenaline boost of energy."

What he said :) Excellent stuff from Sole Signal, as always, and very cool that he provided two very different but equally compelling arrangements of the same source for Portrait of a Plumber; taken together, they're like one giant purple coin of awesome!!

This is awesome. I love the Underground theme from SMB series quite a lot and every its remix for me is a true joy, especially if it's done rightly. And I also love high-energy EDM. And this is the case when these two things met together. So, what is the result? This gorgeous tune and some happy person ;) Gotta admit, though, sometimes it's hard to recognise the source here.

Now this is a dance track I can get behind. The amount of variety and changes as the ReMix goes on keeps the energy high and the track fresh. Loving the section around 4:00 onwards myself. Where the N64 expanded on the underground/cave theme, you expanded upon even more. Very nice work, Sole Signal.

My favourite bit starts around 2:20. The section at 4:06 is great as well. :)

Love the variations and changes throughout. It's all very fun and happy! :D

Great job! I'm not much of a fan of dance music that uses a structure similar to this, but I think this progressed well and I actually didn't feel the need to skip forward. :)

This is one cool mix. I do like the steady single-note bassline with harmonies changing on top of it, I'm a sucker for that sort of stuff. Nice piano breakdown action for variety. The use of the classic underground bg theme is worked really well into the arrangement, I didn't even recognize it on the first listen and it was so cool to spot on the second (after reading the writeup). I also appreciate that the track is fairly long, but doesn't really feel like it.
