ReMix:Tyrian "Data Flux" 3:58

Arranging the music of one song...

"Tyrian, the level"

Primary Game: Tyrian (Epic Games , 1995, DOS), music by Alexander Brandon, Andras Molnar

Posted 2014-06-24, evaluated by the judges panel

This classic DOS shooter will now pretty much always make me think of Game of Thrones :) Magellanic hits us up with a sweet rock arrangement that's got a lovely, more peaceful intro before it kicks out the jams:

"The arrangement itself is fairly conservative when looking at the themes and such, but I really love playing around with the structure of a source. The intro is formed from the chorus. The verse theme is great, but due to its single chord harmonic progression, I didn't feel I could do very much with it in terms of expansion. The original really manages to expertly capture a bright, upbeat catchy melody, but also evoke some melancholy and emotion. As with all my ReMixes, I just wanted to try and enhance what is already written by the original composer and give the spotlight to aspects of the music that I really connect with.

I just want to also mention this is part of the PC ReMix Initiative by Archangel. Spread the word and get those pre-2000 PC ReMixes on OCR. There are many VGM gems and they aren't just on consoles. :D Other than that, thank you again for listening and I look forward to your feedback. I really appreciate all you guys do for the community and like so many others, owe a lot of the skills I've learnt to OCR. Just want to say thanks for the feedback."

More love for the judges panel! I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone ;) Shariq was diggin' the revisions that Liam made based on initial feedback:

"Love it! The issues I had with the previous version are all fixed now. Love the subtle brass in the background. Like I said in my last vote, the guitars are so joyous here, which is exactly the way to approach this song, IMO. Really wonderful stuff."

Other judges still had some reservations, and while the panel was split, Palpable cast the deciding vote with his approval, stil noting some areas for improvement:

"The intro is great - well played/sequenced guitars, lots of space in the mix to create an airy feel. When the track gets to the meat, the drums don't hold the rhythm as well as I would have liked. It seems like you have too many elements fighting and the distinctness is lost a bit. It's not awful, but just not as good as it could have been. I would have played with the balance and EQ a bit more to get each element showing up in its own space. That said, it's a great arrangement and I think it's good enough to pass."

I almost feel like this mix could have STAYED in "intro mode" and gone interesting places without opening the shredgates, and I do hear some of the issues in the louder bits that the judges pointed out, but like Vinnie I think the arrangement sells it in the end. Kudos to Archangel for motivating more artists to focus on PC games - consoles tend to dominate the world of VGM, but computer, handheld, and arcade games all need some love! Good stuff from Liam that starts off smooth and rocks out hard!

The intro is just so peaceful and calm. But when it kicks and becomes more upbeat, more uplifting, it doesn't become worse. Love the chippy synth at around one minuite mark. I also find it rather interesting when it drops at 1:48 and pianos come in. Gotta agree with DarkeSword, btw. Guitars are just top-notch here.

Tyrian, woot!

This is pretty much a perfect representation of what the first level was all about - uplifting, awesome, and heavy. Love the mix, man!

This is the sort of tune you imagine playing alongside the credits scroll, perhaps with bits of concept art fading in and out. Well done!

Glad to see Tyrian getting some love. I actually grabbed this remix back when I saw it on the Workshop board, though this version is a slight improvement. Great remix.

Well done, fellows! I really appreciate the modern treatment. Now I can count, just a little bit more, on my younger contemporaries having heard of this melody!

Wow, that's a beautiful intro. And then, next thing you know, spaceships are takin' off and stuff is happening! I agree with Shariq; the guitars are joyous, and that's the way I like them. They really hit that sweet spot that I can't get enough of. Maybe OA should ReMix this ReMix. :D

The intro to this was nice, but what really made my ears perk up was that piano and percussion combo starting at about 0:47 which lead straight into the rest of the mix. Cool choice of writing there. Lots of enthusiasm going on throughout the mix, and while there are certain production items that sounded a bit off or just came off as too much, there was really nothing that turned me off to it. Overall, intro was definitely the strongest part, but the whole mix was a nice piece of work. Not bad.

Nice remix, I enjoyed it very much! The source isn't something I knew very well but I recognized none the less!

Good work

Having been away from the site for some time, I was thrilled when I saw a new entry for Tyrian. This track captured the feel of the level very well in my opinion. I expect I would have to listen a few more times to find the issues that others cited because I'm too fired up to care at the moment.

I thought there was quite a bit of low end on the piano reverb (EX: 1:55), maybe from the low cut being so low or just the piano tone itself like Justin said. The drums were hurt a bit from the whole ReMix pushing the limiter rather hard. Perhaps the bass guitar is a touch too boomy at times, and I wish there could have been a 4/4 ("normal time") section that was a tad more bassy more often (like the hit at 2:37), but those are minor things. I like the energy and cheery mood here, and though Vig makes sense that the humanization sometimes feels awkward, overall I think this is a pretty strong ReMix. Good job!
