We're back from ConnectiCon 2014 where we (again) had a blast, and now it's time for MOAR TUNES. Resuming our neverending flow of amazing FREE arrangements of VGM is none other than Dude-of-Maze, Chris Getman, with this funky Middle Eastern Kirby jam off of Milky Way Wishes: A Kirby Super Star Tribute, with shades of hip-hop & soul, crazy intonations, and perhaps the first slap bass trill I've ever heard:
"Originally arranged in 2005, this is one of my contributions to the Kirby Super Star remix project that was finally released on OCR in 2013. And still, to this date, it's one of the strangest genre fusions I've ever done. Belly dance disco. Yep. The microtonal Turkish belly dance samples were handled to match every quarter-tone represented from the original track in the game. Other ethnic samples include snake charmer, gamelan percussion, various flutes, and more. Bizarre, a little bit painful, and yet still fun, I hope. Either way, enjoy the strangeness.
It's an older track and the quality isn't great compared to recent stuff... but still, it's just so damn WEIRD, I'd love to see it on OCR eventually. :)"
And so you shall, sir! It *IS* damn weird, but it clicks... kinda reminds me of some of background music from Blade Runner when Deckard goes to visit Taffey Lewis's Snake Pit Bar. Yes, I know that's a very specific reference, but watch the flick if for some godforsaken reason you haven't yet and TELL me I'm wrong :) Or something you'd hear right before John Rhys-Davies catches some monkey-poisoning edibles and delivers perhaps my favorite line from the entire Indiana Jones trilogy (we don't acknowledge LaBeoufed entries)... "Bad dates..." But clearly I digress; Larry gets us back on topic with his thoughts:
"The dissonance works nicely here, and the overall production and presentation of this 2005 creation make clear connections to Mazedude's olden days at OCR.
Chris did a nice job transforming the more militaristic mood of the source tune, blending ethnic and quirky instrumentation into this oddball take. Indeed, if a mummy were trying to dance, it would probably do a lot of awkward shambling, not unlike the purposeful vibe here. Belly dance disco? There's a first time for everything. Whoever pointed Chris at trackers, bless them. :-D"
Throwback Mazedude is still every bit as good now as it was then; he's got the type of distinct style that basically makes his work timeless. Even among the many pecularities in his strange cabinet, this sticks out as a funky blend of twerk, quirk, & Turk. Yep, went there. Great & unorthodox work from MZD that helped pepper Milky Way with another bright star!

One of my favorite tunes off the Kirby album. It's such a strange blend of musical choices, but it WORKS! Funky and ethnic, all while improving a source I honestly didn't care much for in it's original form. Great work from Mazedude.

Hey, it's my favorite Mazedude song! Nothing sounds at all right, so each of the weirdo elements clicks together to create something that sounds wrong and rad at the same time.
The vocal sample at 1:55 is perfect.

Such a funky track, probably my favourite track (at least, the most listened to) of the whole album. It's great!

Damn, those quarter tone tunings are freaky, but NOT flat or badly dissonant. They work so well! Quirky but definitely one for the record books---first remix passed with quarter tone tunings? I also love that odd little zourna sound.
