OCR's given a TON of love to the DKC trilogy, but we've only posted two ReMixes from Donkey Kong Land. Here with a third to keep the other couple company is Rexy, with a mellow, melodic jam that explores the world of submerged bananas with sweet synth leads & various plucked accompaniment; Legacy director Brandon Strader writes:
"It's always a joy to get some new music from Rexy on the site, and a double-joy to get it on the site and as part of the album. Her music is self-indulgent, which is a good thing in my opinion. On some level, your music should be self-indulgent, because you're the most important person to please when all is said and done. Rexy has come a long way in the last few years and continues to improve and amaze as time goes on. "Banaqua" is an elongated, smooth, laid-back song, which is nice to have once in a while, between the grating metal and the grating chiptunes. :)
Very great song and I hope she's super happy and proud of it! Water bananas for all!"
Bev adds:
"Donkey Kong was a major gaming inspiration to me as a child, though in a different way to other retro gamers today. While most would fondly remember playing through his adventures on the SNES, it was the Game Boy titles - the Donkey Kong Land trilogy - that made me see how much Rare was willing to push out of even a black-and-white screen and the Game Boy soundchip. Much like the SNES counterparts, the games were tough and required me to get used to running jumps and chases, precision platforms and the obvious timing to get through all sorts of obstacles including the final showdown with K. Rool. Say what you can about these games, but if I didn't start playing them as a 10-year-old girl, my platforming skills in the years to come wouldn't have been up to scratch.
The only source tunes exclusive to the Game Boy were from the first title, in which I decided to go for the sunken ruins music (first heard in Kremlantis Chaos in world 2). We're looking at a civilisation that was pulled under by the waves many years or even centuries ago - something that was too proud to fall but had to accept its fate and just go along for the ride. Sometimes we have to undergo that same feeling as well - not wanting to take in the unexpected, we'd have to anyway and smile bravely while doing so. Who knows - taking the risks may sometimes not be so bad, or maybe make us feel more humble in doing so.
Naturally, the game certainly went above my humble expectations and one that I felt happy to tackle. And what's possibly less humbling is that the Game Boy and myself share birthdays too - who knew?"
HAPPY BIRTHDAY REXY!! Birthday mixposts are Rare these days, so it's nice that the stars aligned for this one. It's a harmonically interesting source tune, and the progression really surprises me at times - not quite as accessible as most of the SNES tunes, but compelling in its own way. Bev's done good things with it, fleshing out a sunken world with appropriate instrumentation that strikes the right balance between awe & antiquity. Great stuff from Rexy, really glad to have DKL represented on the album - never has bobbin' for bananas sounded so good, just be sure to come up for air & check out the rest of the album!!

Rexy! This is fantastic, far and away my favorite track from you so far! I'm constantly impressed with the level of beauty that people are able to extract from the source, which has a ton of potential but is difficult to fully appreciate with the limited sound quality of the Gameboy sound chip. This would be right at home in an HD remake of Donkey Kong Land, you really captured the source's essence.

The star-tinkle sounds give this mix an enchanting feel. Yup, tinkles. Tinkle tinkle. n.n
Enchanting exploration. ^__^ Particularly like the melody from 3:10-3:33. Ah, this could be a star road theme in Mario.

I am unfortunately also one of those people who are not familiar with the Land series for the most part, having had the Country stuff from the SNES. However, taking the ReMix in itself, this is a gorgeous mix that would really be perfect for something called "Kremlantis Submerged" in a newer DK game. Really brings to mind a watery adventure that has lots of energy, but some mystery in the background as well, as many great watery tunes have. This is quite impressive, Rexy, and I have to say that I think this is one of my favorites off the album. Awesome stuff.

This is a lovely ReMix. It flows along at its own pace and unfolds a watery world worthy of exploring-- very nice!

I never played the GameBoy Donkey Kong games, only SNES, but I listened to this mix anyway with the idea that perhaps there would be some tune similarities to the SNES games. I didn't really pick up on anything significant, but it didn't matter - this was a beautiful song to hear, even without knowing the source material.
I also found what Rexy wrote to be rather profound. Beautiful statements to match the beautiful song.
Nice work and happy birthday, Rexy!

SO GLAD Donkey Kong Land made it on to the album. Often overshadowed by the Country series, the Land games held their own - especially with the limitations the Game Boy had - Rexy nailed it in her comments. DKL was the first Game Boy game I ever owned, and I played it to death.
This track is great and is making me nostalgia so very hard (as is the entire album). It sounds great, it grooves great, and I love it. YAY!

Congrats on getting a mixflood post, Rexy - I know you were really hoping for one! And man, what a hell of a track to get a mixflood post on. It's a beautifully-worked piece, with a really great "ancient" feel to it that lets you easily get lost in its sound. Well done!

Partway through the remix, I was like "ok, this is pretty sweet, but I need to know how much of the sweetness was already in the original." So I went and listened to the source material, which I hadn't heard before. It was kind of sweet, but this arrangement is mega sweet. It's like I'm swimming in liquid music. The harmonies and progressions and textures are so good.

I don't really know Rexy outside of her piano arrangements (maybe that's a sign for me to check out more of *her* music). This is a very well-developed chiptune arrangement that deserved to be in the mixflood. Some quite excellent bass, too.
