How well does Mattias Häggström Gerdt know Propellerheads' Reason? Well, they hired him. He IS a propellerhead. I know most Reason users are getting hyped for R8, coming NEXT MONTH and featuring a pretty significant overhaul of the tried-and-true one-stop-shopping approach to DAWs. Just give me a Kontakt 5 rack extension, somehow!! This rather badass Z64 jam from Z25 starts off smooth, with jazz/funk/fusion/disco affectations, but Ganon takes over @ 1'59", and he brought his DUBSTEP with him:
"Hey, listen! Don't mind the drop!
Started with some Fairlight samples and an 80's vibe, then I left it alone for a while. Got into a funk groove, then I left it alone for a while. Made a fat dubstep drop, then I left it alone for a while. Then I finished it! All made in Reason 6. I actually felt so guilty for trying out some dubstep, so I had to make up for it with live electric bass, loads of funk and "Windmill Hut." In the end, the remix became a hot mess of a track but, damn it, I like it! Hope you do too. :)"
Larry writes:
"You can tell why Propellerheads hired Mattias, because this is a sweet display of what Reason's capable of for several genres, all while morphing and blending three Zelda themes together. It's a mix of a lot of different influences (funk, disco, jazz, OMGdubwub, ambient).
On the small touches, I loved the keyboard chords Mattias peppered throughout the track, which added a lot of character for the "Temple of Time" treatment. This had a good funk approach with both "Temple of Time" and the classic Overworld theme for the first half before shifting to dubstep from 1:44-2:13 and returning to "Temple of Time" before a well-timed drop in the energy. The dropoff at 2:27 introed by the strings was swanky, and led to a nice rendition of "Windmill Hut" to close it. Among a stacked lineup of fellow indie VGM composers recruited by Roger "Rekcahdam" Hicks, Mattias made his mark on 25YEARLEGEND. There's nothing else like "Hey, Listen" - nice and smoove with a dash of aggressive. :-)"
Agreed on all counts; with three source tunes and at least three genres, this is a veritable musical triforce in its own right, and made an incredibly strong album incredibly stronger. Fantastic work from Mattias on this genre & source blending master class, which shows us what he can do AND what Reason can do - not only tremendnously impressive, but also exceedingly fun!

I was worried that if I heard the original “Hey, Listen” sample, I would hate it. But I love how it was used in this track. I love that this track took “Hey, Listen” and turned it into a code for “wait for the beat to DROP.” And boy does the beat drop when Navi tells you to listen (most of the time anyway). But after the beat is done dropping, we’re back to mellow and slow. It’s kind of odd, but definitely worth listening to for the beat drops.

The beginning funk jam alone was terrific to listen to, especially that effect at around 1:25-1:29, but then the dubstep comes in and everything goes into overdrive. The "Hey, Listen!" sound clip being used in a way that doesn't get annoying is a pretty good feat, so props alone for that. I've said before that Windmill Hut/Song of Storms was my favorite OoT source, and hearing it with his beat is hot. Really digging this.

Yep, this is a weird one, and I'm really rather fond of it. Actually, I remember using the "Hey, listen!" drop for an intro segment on a VGM interview show I used to host. Good memories!

A touch too compressed for my taste, but that aside (and I know this is super old)...
This makes good use of minimal textures in the beginning to create a nice disco groove. The lil wah keys solo at 1:27 was pretty cool. The dubstep was a bit "where did that come from?", but it's not like it's too abrasive to listen to. Later on, I'm surprised you kept that hard snare going in an ambient-ish setting, but it's ok, you'd notice that today.
Welp, not your best work, but still enjoyable.
