MEGA DRIVE FIVE!! Our third September flood, following our SM64 & Square Enix floods, is all about the BLAST PROCESSING, offering up cinco arrangements of games from the golden age of Sega. Mak Eightman kicks us off by returning to Doom Troopers to troop some additional doom in the form of an explosive metal/industrial jam featuring shredding guitars, heavy-hitting beats, rude synths, and.... mallets? Well they DO have a "skull" sorta sound to them. And... a piano solo? Mak really took this one over the top & managed to coherently incorporate a lot of components, making for a badass addition to BadAss 2:
"Yeah. I know. Again Doom Troopers. Yeah. I know. Sounds not so good. I'm pleased with this one. The feel of small studio room, IMO, I like it. Piano could be suck. Best of all!!!"
Such braggadocio!! Humble to a fault, I like how he nevertheless ends things with thrice-exclaimed well-wishes. Judges were unanimously upbeat, but noted some roughness on the production side of things. Palpable came through with the most appreciation for the sheer creativity involved in manifesting such a stylistic chimera:
"I think I like this a lot more than the other judges - apart from some minor production issues, everything worked. Right from the intro, I liked the dark quirky mood that was set and once the drums kicked in, this reached an energy level that never flagged. The bursts of rhythm guitar, strings, and machine FX were awesomely placed, and the guitar solos all rocked. I also loved the variety of guitar tones you used; little touches like that really add to the replayability. Oh, and then somehow you fit a freakin' piano section in this too, and it's not even one of the quiet parts! Definitely my new favorite arrangement of yours, and an easy pass."
One of those ReMixes that seems like it shouldn't work on paper, this is a good example of execution & creativity triumphing over the conventional wisdom surrounding NOT doing a piano solo in the middle of a metal/industrial arrangement of Doom Troopers. Okay, perhaps that particular wisdom isn't all that conventional, but you get the point... wild & crazy stuff from Mak, who somehow pulled it all off and gave BA2 one of its most eccentric and unexpected highlights!

I'm okay with metal and mallets. Hell, I don't even have an issue with the piano. It did sound like to me that the piano was a bit quiet compared to everything else, but honestly, this was a nice blend of things that normally wouldn't think of that end up sounding good. Nice.

I love the balance between pure energy, the bleak determination conveyed by the marching rhythm and the vague silliness of those "blah blah-blah!" samples.
The mallets are a good logical implementation of sounds used in the SNES original.

I didn't mind the mallets, though the piano felt a little out of place and the mixing was overcompressed. Other than that, this really does conjure a feeling of malice, and a little chaos.

The mallets aren't sitting well with me, but I quite liked the piano introduction. The mix as a whole came off as aggressive, borderline generic metal-- but it's pretty good aggressive, borderline generic metal!

Cool mix! The overall sound might be a little on the tinny/treble-heavy side for my tastes, but there are a lot of elements within that I'm a big fan of. The drum patterns in particular stood out to me; there's a whole lot of energy and momentum behind them.
