I know "Talk Like a Pirate Day" was LAST week, but get those eyepatches BACK out, because Nostalvania has followed up his Zelda solo piano debut mixpost from August with a full-on smooth jazz/funk take on Sagat!! Larry detects a trend:

"Tim Sheehy, Mustin, and posu/Morse have all taken Thai jazz excursions in the past, all to great results. We dunno how it came to be, but something's in the air with jazzy Sagat arrangements."

Perhaps a good corollary to the accepted rule that Guile's theme "goes with everything" is that Sagat's theme "goes with jazz"?? This ReMix definitely reminds me of Morse, posu, and that Bad Dudes funk/jazz feel, so hats off to Markus for throwing up a second mix that's pretty different from his (also superb) debut. I guess the common link is an emphasis on some lovely keys, as we're graced with delicious electric piano licks as far as the left eye can see. Adressing original criticisms about lack of source usage, Markus followed up with these comments on his resubmission:

"Alright, so here is the re-submission of my Sagat remix. A smooth and jazzy 5/4 groove. Long e-piano solo at 2:25. Tiger!! I added more source material in several places:

  • 1:22-1:34 - e-piano comping
  • 1:48-2:01 - piano
  • 3:08-3:40 - background synth
  • 3:47-3:50 - bass
  • 3:53-4:07 - organ

I also added a bit more reverb and delay to the brass."

Richard Parker!! Some grrrrrreeeeaaat!! changes made this revision a no-brainer; Flexstyle writes:

"I hear the source throughout. Solos are groovy. The production is drop-dead sexy. What more needs to be said?"

Fun & funky stuff from Markus that reminds me of several other OC ReMixers in a great way, continues the trend of classy Sagat jazz/funk, and delivers on my promise in his first mixpost that you'd be hearing more, soon!

There does seem to be something about Sagat's stage that lends itself to this kind of jazz really well. It just fits like a glove. I never really cared for Sagat's theme in it's original form, so I safely say that I would be all for hearing this anytime instead. Very good. Loving the e-piano here, man. Well done.

From the first decision thread for this song:

EVERYTHING about this song works for me, except the amount of source used. Great production, playing, mood, and mix title! When the Sagat theme is in play, everything is firing right, but this is way too liberal for me.

So happy that Nostal was able to find more source to fit into this. I relistened to the version we passed and the way the instruments are put together really hits those happy synapses in my brain. Science! Awesome follow-up to the incredible Ocarina of Time mix - Nostal is very much on my radar.

Not bad at all! I'm partial to when things get broken down at 3:40-- reeeaaaaaal smooth. Also, the title made me laugh. :D

Ha, getting a sort of Pilotwings 64 vibe from this. You had reservations about the sample quality, but this is a perfect example of samples that just gel for a complete sounding experience. Style is a thing! Super smooth, insta download, good stuff.

Honestly, i really wasn't sure if this would pass at all (I was worried about sample quality and i didn't trust my mixing abilities), but i'm happy it finally did! I think i have to thank Chimpazilla and all the other people from the workshop forum (and the Judges) for their feedback which really helped me to improve this!

Ooh, that E. Piano is suuuuper warm. Showing off the arrangement process as per yoozh. Really gorgeous bass writing, clever harmonic progressions, and the comping is pretty inspired.
