Newcomer GlacialSpoon (Robert Kemp) makes a strong, memorable debut with a sick, SFX-laden dubstep take on "Lost Woods" aka "Saria's Song" - the theme works realllly well in this context, and I'd go so far as to say that this is one of my favorite VGM arrangements in the genre. Keep-you-guessing transitions & assertive, galvanized production are a big part of that; the artist writes:
"I hope you enjoy this light, dubstep tribute to "Saria's Song" from Ocarina of Time. Taking a 30-second loop and extending it out to a full track proved a little tricky and I had to pad out around the main theme with an ambient intro build up, and extra sequences. Hopefully these extending phrases help punctuate the main theme when it takes to the fore. I couldn't make a dubstep track without a bit of a filthy drop either!"
While over five minutes long, time just kinda flies by; it's such a pleasant, uplifting melody, and hearing it run through the beat grinder & EDM-ified is rather a blast. FX change-ups and mangling @ 2'01" are delectable; indulgent, sure, but with evident skill & musicality. The arrangement plays into the strengths of the genre perfectly, and the glue (including a cameo of "Zelda's Theme") that holds everything together is everything BUT filler. Chimpazilla writes:
"OMG are you kidding me with this??? This is amazing! I am a lover of dubstep and also of sfx from the game being remixed, and also OoT is my all time favorite game. Source use seems fine to me, and stopwatch Larry has done his stopwatch thing here so we're all good with source use. The arrangement and creativity totally carries it for me. Blending in Zelda's lullaby was a nice touch. This is awesomesauce."
No one should throw around an adjective like "awesomesauce" lightly, but I'm gonna have to agree with Kris; concept & execution are spot-on, everything clicks, and the result is a super-catchy source/genre combo, served up fresh. DarkeSword adds:
"I really like this one a lot. I was a bit iffy on the lead but the rest of the track is really great. Love how you work in the little fanfares and bits from the game. A really high energy take with some great effects."
I don't think this same exact approach would work as well for other sources, but it really clicks for "Lost Woods" - something about the simplicity & optimism of the straightforward original melody really jives with maximalist, schizophrenic dubstep aggression. I'm not a huge dubstep guy, and I love it, so I'm guessing I won't be alone; impressive debut from GlacialSpoon, highly recommended!

LOL It's an interesting concept to take a simple source like this and put DUBSTEP on it. Also, interesting choice of instruments (the clarinet later on). The result is surprisingly "happily-sounding". The production is clean, and the ear candy is real. Nice ideas, nice execution. Enjoyed it.

Holy crap, I can't belive I missed this track! It's plain awesome! The section 0:45 - 1:14 sounds a bit muddy for me, but this approach still works very well. It's probably the most cheerful dubstep I've ever heard and it's also one of the most hard-hitting electronica tracks on OCR. Let me say this once again: IT'S DAMN AWESOME! The creative usage of in-game SFX is great as well, especially the butchered "Hey, listen!" vocal clip. And the drums here are fantastic too! This is certainly a sick debut. I hope GlacialSpoon will submit more stuff

Super nice work!!! This is a great mix, and I love the upbeat style... Sometimes dubstep can get buried in the "serious/dirty/dark" elements, but this peppy mix is just what the Doctor Mario ordered... Good arrangement!

Awesomesauce indeed. The lead was a little sharp to me, but other than that minor issue, I really liked this one. The use of the SFX and little jingles were sweet and the wubs were added in tastefully with the help of the main melody. Zelda's theme helped even things out. There are times when I love dubstep and other times when I really don't, but this is one of the better dubs I've heard in a while, so great job, especially near the end of the track with the wubbed-up "Hey listen"'s that you threw in. Not bad at all.

The track is nice overall, though it doesn't live up to what I expect from a typical dubstep mix, which is good and bad. The track is definitely well crafted, which makes it stand out. The production quality is pretty good as far as I can tell. As far as the parts I didn't like go, I think the sound effects from the game work against the track more than it helps. To me, they're distracting, somewhat cheesy, and make it difficult to focus on the actual music. While clearly "dubstep," I also felt the mix was too conservative in its wubs. The "drop" felt like a small dip in a road and was rather lackluster for me. Overall, the track sounds good to me and I enjoyed listening to it the three listens I gave it. But what's preventing me from putting it on my playlist is that it's in an awkward space in between what I want out of dubstep tracks and other electronic genres such as house or trance.

FL SLAYER IS IN THIS?!
I have to agree, this is worthy of being called 'awesomesauce'. I mean, some of the leads were pretty piercing (lots of FM basses turned into leads can be pretty painful, and that seems to be what kind of lead that is at 1:29), and the (of course) fake guitar can be offputting, but I think they work in this context, somehow... The wubs were woven in cleanly, so I like that. Nice and diverse tones. Ending was kind of abrupt for me. Sounds a bit like something I guess I could call complextro, in a sense. Overall, great adaptation to the genre. I would personally have liked less bright highs and less high end clutter, and a less abrupt ending, but other than that this is pretty solid. I think this is on the accessible side of dubstep.

This is *still* AWESOMESAUCE. You know who else loves this mix? DARUNIA. I can just see him whirling around to this, the crazy fool.
