ReMix:Final Fantasy VI "Strange World" 5:40

From WillRock comes one of the stranger, unpredictable arrangements off Balance and Ruin - an experimental track that fuses cinematic, orchestral, and rock aesthetics into a somewhat creepy, unsettling procession of sound. Mr. Harby writes:

"This remix was a stylistic experiment to try and fuse various styles together to make something that sounded a little unconventional, with a combination of orchestral, rock and electronic elements. I feel I managed to succeed. It features some orchestral percussion and violins, various synths, electronic drums, and a guitar solo to end it on a high note. The structure is a little unorthodox as well. It has 4 distinct sections in it, which I hope flow well enough for you guys. I'd say it was a successful remix from an aesthetic point of view. :D Special thanks to zircon for offering to master the track for me. :)"

Great job from Will in terms of doing something way outside his usual style - or almost anyone else's, for that matter. Palpable sums things up well:

"This is an ambitious yet understated ReMix. The first half follows the original track closely, but adapts it to a strange blend of chromatic percussion, ethnic drums, and synths. There's no sudden movements, no dramatic shifts - Will maintains the mood with subtle detail. Finally, at 2:45, the song breaks into something closer to a film score, with wildly filtered synths and choir. He moves back to the texture of the first section during the last minute, but then out of left field comes a sweet guitar solo. Though the elements of Will's typical style are here, this is quite a departure from what I'm used to seeing from him. Will usually goes for the big pop moments with a focus on melody; here he trades it for tension and mood. It's awesome to see him stretch his wings and do it so well."

Couldn't have said it better myself, and didn't :) This mix even has some proggish, Pink Floyd moments buried in there, and the narrative ground that it covers makes it feel like Will's taking you on a tour of his house, and every room is painted a different color, with furniture from a different time period, and yet somehow it all works together. While not one of the catchier mixes on B&R (or the original OST, for that matter), this is still quite memorable; I think Will really made some great decisions in going for something transporting, dramatic, & odd. My favorite part is probably 2'13", just because it feels like Floyd doing a live show and just kinda going with the flow, and that's a huge compliment in my book.
