It's freakin' COLD outside, snow's coming down, so it's time to HEAT THINGS UP with some... tennis!?! Well, more specifically, with an awesome multi-instrumental rock collab from Hak, jnWake, Wild_Cat, & XPRTNovice that represents our FIRST ReMix of Super Final Match Tennis for the SNES, with some Sonic (2006) thrown in for good measure; Ivan writes:

"A cover of a really great but unknown theme from the game Super Final Match Tennis for the Super Famicom. I made this song for the MAGFest XII edition of Dwelling of Duels, and it ended up placing 14th out of 35 entries. I found the source theme by going through random YouTube VGM playlists and I knew that I had to cover it because it's the most "Hakstok" song ever! After I started working on the arrangement, I added a part from a Sonic 2006 song "Wave Ocean ~The Inlet~", because it had similar chords and fit nicely in the mix. Since this was a MAGFest DoD, I decided to go all out so I recruited several people to perform live instruments. The initial arrangement was done in less than 3 days, so that gave me lots of time to find people, and three brave ones answered the call!

Here's the lineup:

Ivan Hakštok: mixing, guitars, drum sequencing, piano sequencing, backing synths
jnWake: lead synths, organ, piano editing
Wild_Cat: bass
XPRTNovice: saxophone

Now, here's the source breakdown:

0:00-0:43 - original intro
0:43-0:54 - chords based on A section (0:07-0:20) of the SFMT source
0:54-1:41 - pretty much a cover of the SFMT source
1:41-2:08 - guitar solo, chords based on the A section of the SFMT source
2:08-2:30 - section C (1:10-1:30) of the Sonic 2006 source
2:30-2:54 - organ solo with the same chords as the previous part
2:54-3:06 - B section (0:20-0:32) of the SFMT source with some additional synth wankery
3:06-3:29 - the "chorus" section of the SFMT source (0:32-0:56)
3:29-4:15 - another guitar solo over the chords from the SFMT source
4:15-5:02 - chorus section of the SFMT source
5:12-5:33 - some outro wankery over the chords from the chorus section of the SFMT source

Definitely a successful collab, & Joe's sax in particular ends up giving the piece a very different feel. DarkeSword writes:

"Man I love these tracks that just commit so hard to being happy and upbeat. Really loving this one all around. AWESOME performances, especially the guitar solos. Clapping actually sounds a little strange, but I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it. Saxophone stuff makes it feel like something from the early 90s, in really good, nostalgic way. Awesome stuff."

Reminds me of the type of jam you'd hear on late night television interludes or after commercial breaks on sitcoms (ones with GOOD music), only extended into a full length track & rockin' out a bit harder. Emunator adds:

"Your drums, guitar tone, all of the synth patches, and live performances are extremely well-chosen and produced with the kind of shimmering polish you'd expect from this genre. The live bass kicks ass - you could have easily gotten away with using a sampled bass but Wild_Cat's contribution makes this sound all the better. Joe's contribution is a really wonderful wildcard that just totally clicks for me, stylistically. All of the little details make this even more enjoyable on repeat listens."

Ditto all that; excellent stuff, with a unique throwback aesthetic - very positive & unabashedly enthusiastic. Ivan did a great job getting the right collaborators together & integrating their work, as this legitimately sounds like the output of an established & comfortable band/group. Congrats to all involved & great to see so much fantastic music from DoD - be sure to check dwellingofduels.net for more!

A really upbeat remix, very enjoyable. It has a very happy atmosphere, and the production is excellent -- I can hear all small details in this one. The choice of instruments is also on spot -- love the mix between the heavy guitars and the sax. This mix put a smile on my face, nice job! :)

Site's not dead. As a matter of fact, once you mentioned the site, I immediately dug it out. I'm waiting for the WIP feature to come back to that website.

I did indeed collaborate with captainhydao on getting a SPC rip of this soundtrack.

My recollection on getting contacted about this particular remix is practically nonexistent (and as a matter of fact, there's a good chance I was never properly reached.). However, I did discover this by looking myself up on Google after it was posted.

To be specific on ripping roles, I did dumping and final tagging, and captainhydao did track identification.

Definitely an enjoyable remix. Plus, I actually recognize segments where the actual song was used.

If you remember, this song was posted on now (temporarily?) dead vgremix.com, where we exchanged a few lines in the comment section and you told me about your and hydao's effort to spread the word about obscure japanese-only game soundtracks. :)

This freaking rocks guys! Wow, lots of upbeat energy and great progression throughout the length of the mix. The production is incredible and this mix just feels great. Really hard not to enjoy something so damn happy and powerful. Seriously, this is outstanding work and going right on my playlist for sure.

This song is indeed the most Hakstock thing in the world. Super upbeat and with a nice tempo!

EDIT: Ah, reading the judges thread I noticed a small complaint about the intro synth. I played it live actually, but since the rhytm is tough to follow with the backing patch I may have played more rigid than I should've.

I'd like to add two things not written in my submission:

First, Super Final Match Tennis has an amazing soundtrack, I encourage everyone to check it out. I've never played the game and probably never will, but I could listen to the soundtrack for hours.

Second, HUUUGE thanks to a couple of guys named captainhydao and KungFuFurby. KungFuFurby was the one who ripped this soundtrack and captainhydao tagged it and uploaded a few songs on youtube. Without them, I probably would've never been able to find out about this game or the soundtrack. They've both contacted me since and said they liked the remix. :)
