And he saw that it was good... Want some solo piano Castlevania II jazz? If you answered "YES!!!," then you'll be happy to know that's the RIGHT answer! At least for today, as we're posting Nostalvania's 4'33" long jazz meditation on the town stage BGM from Simon's Quest. As with Markus' previous three mixes, the arrangement, performance, and recording are all impeccable, but I specifically dig some of the voicings he came up with here, in particular some gorgeous major-key turns... very striking & fresh. Playful mix title, too - like a combination of Die Hard 3 & The Book of Genesis. The undercurrent at moments reminds me of "Take Five," even if the time signature doesn't, and the overall variety and harmonic complexity packed into this mix really satisfy, not unlike the peanuts in Snickers. The artist writes:

"This is my solo jazz-piano arrangement of "The Silence of the Daylight" from Castlevania II. I used reharmonisations, time shifts, and time signature changes to keep the arrangement interesting. Special thanks to timaeus222 (Truong-Son Nguyen) for the mastering! I used my Roland FP-4 Digital Piano and Cubase Artist 7 as my DAW.

Source breakdown:

0:00-0:15 - Intro (variation of original intro)
0:16-0:41 - Theme A, B, C
0:41-0:56 - Intro
0:57-1:19 - A, B, C played in octaves
1:20-1:29 - Transition into 6/8 time
1:30-1:53 - Interlude (kind of a variation of the intro chords)
1:54-2:05 - C
2:06-2:10 - Interlude
2:11-2:35 - C repeated with varied chords
2:36-2:56 - Interlude, transition back to 4/4 time, slowdown
2:57-3:09 - B, buildup and speedup
3:10-3:27 - C
3:28-3:43 - Chords of A
3:44-3:39 - A
4:00-4:11 - Outro
4:12-4:33 - Ending"

That ending is classic; makes me mentally go "Oh yeahhhhhhhhhhhh!" and add a ride cymbal roll. In my mind. Markus is one of a handful of artists carrying the solo piano VGM arrangement torch on OCR these days, and I'm personally thrilled to be posting his music - each new mix offers something different while maintaining all of the strengths of his debut last year. This is a familiar CV tune given new life & depth through a creative arrangement & invigorating performance - Chimpazilla agrees wholeheartedly:

"I can't say enough good things about this track. Once again Markus knocks it out of the park with his solo piano interpretation. The source is used throughout the track with the exception of a couple of beautifully written transitions. He has woven the portions of the source together expertly into a unique arrangement, yet he has kept everything recognizable... the very definition of a remix! The playing is flawless, the sample is lovely and the reverb is tasteful, and Timaeus did a very nice job mastering it. Really awesome!"

Ditto all that; great stuff!

This. This is brilliant.
Its a tasty jazz tune that makes me feel like smoking a bowl and making off-color jokes with the ghost of Duke Ellington

New review: An interesting and original arrangement, very jazzy (duh). Solid performance as well. A few references to other pieces (I swear I heard a few notes from "Beginning") before it gets quieter. I really like this part -- more intimate, and still jazzy. Nice transition to the final part.

Any chance of ever posting a chord chart?

Well i dunno maybe, if i have the time and patience . All i can offer for now is a VERY bad hand scrawled sheet of the intro and the first A B and C. I didn't write down the other chords and stuff.

As a fellow pianist who used to toy around a lot with this song (and the rest of the CV2 soundtrack), I really dig this. Any chance of ever posting a chord chart?

I have always liked the town theme in Castlevania 2, and some jazzy piano is more than welcomed in these parts. Terrific slowdown section, I'm digging that the most in this amazing ReMix. Sounds like it could have ended there, but you went even further with it and kept going for well over another minute and put the exclamation point on it. That ending, man, damn! Well done, fella!

The sources blend so smoothly in this mix. And all on a single instrument allowing for natural, ultra-solo representations of the themes. Minimalistic but dynamic, true to the source, and honest about what it is. My kind of remix...heck, my kind of song in general. Kudos!

Great work! This song is a breath of fresh air that caught my attention from the beginning and didn't let me go until the very end.

Really love this solo piano arrangement. It's one of those pieces that's so good I don't need to know the original to enjoy it.
