Arranging the music of one song...
"The End of DOOM (End)"
Primary Game: Doom (id Software , 1993, DOS), music by Bobby PrincePosted 2015-05-28, evaluated by djpretzel
Excited for the NEW Doom? Well, check out the OLD Doom's music MADE new by resident expert soundmangler Brent Wollman, aka Redg, as he takes on the original's ending theme with a chopped, undulating, & apocalyptic drum 'n' bass arrangement:
"Came home to find more demons. Might as well jam.
Intro-0:33 - That harp part from the very beginning of the original
0:33-1:58 - Through the whole progression once with melody
1:58-end - DnB jamming on the chords"
I love how this starts off rather untethered, only gradually providing enough points of reference for you to get a sense of what's going on. Doom's sources are relatively minimalist themselves, so in 2'33" he actually does cover the end theme, along with the brief intro - it's all there. Chimpazilla writes:
"Ah, Brent... the king of distortion, resynthesis, and subtlety. Well I just love this! Lots of little details, source is there, wicked cool stuff. Wish it were longer."
Liontamer adds:
"I like the stuttered and uneasy feeling of the piece, but be prepared to think your headphones are messing up. If you're paying attention, you'll realize that's clearly not the case, but, hey, when did that ever stop anyone from complaining? :-D VERY subtle as far as the source melody, which purposefully doesn't stand out. I would have preferred the source melody to be more upfront, like the initial 16 seconds of the piece, because I think it could have been done without drastically changing the balance of the piece, but this is more about the sound design, which Brent always excels at. Redg, ALWAYS pushing the envelope!"
Indeed; I have to say, the Doom ending theme wouldn't be my first choice of something to arrange, melodically speaking, but Redg works in mysterious ways that don't put melody front-and-center, and here he captures a dark & raw feel that makes sense relative to the game's atmosphere. Initially disorienting, this ReMix eventually opens up into a sinister cadence, offering a liberal-but-identifiable interpretation of the ending theme to the first entry in a classic, soon-to-be-resurrected franchise!

Uh, it's... interesting I guess. Redg has his very own style that may not suit everyone, but I can totally agree on the fact it's very well produced. Arrangement-wise, it's quite chaotic, and even quite repetitive to my hears. Sorry, the solid production won't save this one for me.

Seriously fits the soundscape I've always pictured Doom with, with a dark, crunchy, grittiness that goes hand in hand with the hellish challenges you face within it's levels. Nice work. Definitely my favorite ReMix from you so far.

I was jammin' to this tune, but then a couple of archviles appeared suddenly... Luckily, they didn't want to kill me for some reason. Wait, there're no archviles in this game. That's weird. Oh well, I guess I can continue jammin'. Great tune, actually.

Hm... I'm getting drums, and I'm getting bass, but not exactly Drum 'n Bass. Didn't really make my hype-o-meter go off. That aside, it's a pretty interesting, minimalist approach to a ReMix. Nice use of FM crackling to make things more disorienting, in a good way.
