Gonna keep things moving right along with this floaty, airborn chiptune EDM arrangement from DDRKirby(ISQ) off of B&R, which blends several sources & influences:
"This was my entry into zircon's Final Fantasy VI Remix Contest, which ended up tying for second place and making it into Balance and Ruin as a result! :D This song features a handful of references and cameo melodies, including, first and foremost, the arpeggio sequence from the Fez track "Adventure," which is featured at the beginning and end of this track. Big shoutout to Disasterpeace for giving me the OK for me to use it, and definitely check out the Fez soundtrack if you haven't already! To be completely honest, I actually didn't have any sort of clever plan or meaning behind featuring it -- I was just working on the intro to the song and it just sort of... happened. :P
Then at 0:33-0:58, I threw in a melody from one of my original songs, "Fractale," before we finally get kicking into the main chorus and meat of the song. It's pretty standard 9-bit stuff from me until 1:55 where I empty out the mix and go into an arrangement that's more similar to something you would hear out of an NES 2A03 track (but not quite, since I'm still using delay/reverb/etc.). There's a nod to Terra's theme at 2:20, and then the build at 2:39 is the "Mega Man" section. To top things off, I crammed Setzer's theme in at 2:54 for the last iteration of the chorus. Fun stuff, hope you guys enjoy it!"
I certainly did; definitely one of the chippier tracks on Balance and Ruin, and even goes FULL CHIP @ 1'55" as Timmie mentions. Album director zircon writes:
"The Blackjack theme, along with Setzer's theme, is one of my favorites from FF6. It has this great sense of motion, and really captures the spirit of flying all over the world with total freedom. DDRKirby's light and airy style fits that composition perfectly, and expands it out in new directions. Also, I love how he worked in Setzer's theme for the first part of the track and made it flow."
Agreed; there's also a lightness to the overall arrangement approach in terms of incorporating various sources, and it all combines for a free-spirited & chiptastical flight through the clouds, fulfilling the promise of its title. Great work!

This one sounds very "happy". You cannot listen to this and not start dancing a little. I guess the chiptune helps a lot and brings a nice vibe to the track. The overall mixing is maybe a bit too "high-pitched" and lacks some bass, but that's far from being a problem. Instead, it reinforces the flying atmosphere. The ending is a bit abrupt though. Liked it.

Some classic DDRKirby(ISQ) sounds and techniques being used here, I see! Complex, cheery 9-bit madness. Quite a few themes and melodies were combined throughout this one, and in my opinion, it all works really well! There are a couple iffy spots, I suppose, but when taken as a whole, this mix is one crazy ride. There’s some awesome music here, and all y’all need to hear it.

It's always fun to hear more chiptune tracks on OCR, and having this one from the Balance and Ruin album hit the front page is cool. I really enjoyed the "mega man" section and this would fit right into the world of retro soundtracks any day. Fantastic ReMix.

Let me rephrase the title - There's Nothing Like "There's Nothing Like Flying"! It's completly outstanding and unique piece of music with its own atmosphere. The airy 9-bit chips with EDM jam are very tasty. The build-up @ 1:06 is short but sweet. And the kickin' section @ 2:39 almost made me cry in joy. Yeah, this is another gem in the crown of BR!

So I must say that this mix seems all over the place - though reading about its origins makes it a lot more clear - and I have to say that its haphazard nature keeps me from truly enjoying a fully realized piece. Within that context, however, this thing is amazing, particularly 2:00-2:45 or so, where it's nothing but pure, unfiltered goodness. Wow that's a great section. I think my take on this mix is a lot like that - a lot of great sections that seem sort of haphazardly brought together. If this kind of wild arrangement can be this quality, I envision some great pieces in the future!

Balance and Ruin is my favorite OCR album to date, and of so many memorable tracks, this is perhaps my favorite.
This track has been my phone's alarm tone pretty much since album release. Nice to see it posted!
