Arranging the music of one song...
"Marble Zone"

WAT!?! Dayum... Sir_NutS (Paul Michael Molina) continues our Sonic the Hedgehog twofer mini-flood with a departure from his usual EDM styles, completely killing it with a swingin' glitch funk "Marble Zone" jam that is, scientifically and theologically speaking, bona fide ridonkulous:
"For this one, I went out of my comfort zone to create some glitch funk. This song has many genres and influences woven into it. It's funk first, of course, but has a bit of a disco flair as well. Of course, being a glitch hop song, it has that swing beat and snappy snare the genre is known for when it reaches the drop. Speaking of the drop, had tons of fun with this one. Most sounds are of my own making as always, but there are some vocals samples there, as well as Sonic's own voice.
For the glitchy funk approach, I opened a separate project where I could construct several different funky loops with brasses and guitars and the like. Once I had those built up, I bounced them to .rex and imported them back into this project to be mangled and cut into the catchy riffs that drive the song. Pretty fun stuff.
As far as arrangement goes, I took many liberties with the original, but every section of the song has something recognizable there. This one goes to my main man Joel, master of all jives, and all things Sonic as well. Thanks for teaching me to always keep it funky."
Great stuff; whether it's the genre approach, the production technique of loop-building and then converting/importing to integrate, or both, this really works for me... super-funky, almost "Motownphilly"-esque at times, where the swing's the thing, blending in modern EDM components in a way that clicks and is as nasty as it wants to be... this glitch funk, I quite like it. Duck quack wah guitar discotheques it up later on, as NutS mentions. Judges felt some passages were a bit busy, but no one denied (how could they?) the transformative, creative, and utterly infectious arrangement. Liontamer writes:
"There was some repetition of the broad ideas, but I heard minor variations of the verses through grace notes, SFX usage, and stuff like that. Also, the overall arrangement was so transformative that it could withstand some repetition, so I wasn't close to saying there was any reason to hold the arrangement back on any level. Great energy and nice, creative flow here from Mike!"
Going a bit beyond the judges' feedback/approval, I personally think this was a great deviation-from-form & branching out for the artist; this isn't a genre/style I've heard much of, but I'm familiar enough with the components, and for my money, NutS nailed it. metaphist gave us a completely new take on "Green Hill Zone," and now Sir_NutS has done the same for "Marble Zone," also a popular source from the original Sonic. Fantastic, funky work; highly recommended.

Cool. I feel like the more aggressive and glitchy this mix got, the more I liked it. Plenty going on to keep things interesting, sometimes a wee bit too much, but when it hit those sweet sections, especially with the SFX and Sonic's voice playing over the dubs, this gelled together rather well. I always enjoy hearing new fusions of musical styles and ideas, so this was a great listen. I could really dig funky dubs. Not bad at all, dude, good take on Marble Zone.

Hmm, not feeling this one. The production, arrangement, and everything are great, but it's just not for me. Good job anyways.

Awesome mix! It goes through a lot of genres but stays super groovy/funky all the time. Instrumentation is excellent. The Sonic FX were on spot lol The production is very good. Nothing more to say -- I'm amazed by how well this concept worked! Super nice job!

So we go from Motown funk, to dubstep funk, to jazz funk (fusion jazz even?). I guess the dubstep parts represent what would happen if you fell into the lava you were sailing on? I do love how the vocal samples represented the beat dropping the second time. Great track all around.

Love the genre mashup. I get the critiques regarding the low-end...relentlessness, but otherwise really enjoyed this. The glitching is really well executed for the frame of mind that this track brings ya to. Dope one NutS!

I agree with the crits, but ultimately I love how this turned out. It's interesting that this is kind of an organic/electronic glitch hop track rather than purely electronic, and I find that it distinguishes it well from other tracks of a similar genre. It's also a bit surprising that the bass in the glitch hop sections was the source sometimes, but it felt natural to me, rather than feeling forced. I thought the most creative part was 2:03 - 2:21, where you had a swung interpretation with some intermediate/neighboring notes.

Haha, I was listening to this track on Mr. Molina's Soundcloud a few minutes ago and now I see it posted here. What a wonderful job! So much fun(k) and energy! I just can't stop jammin' to this track.
