Arranging the music of one song...
"Gang-Plank Galleon"
Primary Game: Donkey Kong Country (Nintendo , 1994, SNES), music by David Wise, Eveline Novakovic, Robin BeanlandPosted 2015-09-30, evaluated by the judges panel
We end September with a twofer mini-flood of DKC ReMixes from newcomers, starting with this short-but-satisfying rock/metal take on "Gang-Plank Galleon" from Thrace (Daniel Hubble), who writes:
"Favorite song of the soundtrack. I had always wanted to do a metal cover of this song. There're tons of covers out there for this song, for sure, but I like to think I've given it a slightly unique twist. Enjoy! :)"
Larry actually covers pretty much everything I could think to cover with his decision:
"Solid metal cover with good energy. At 2:15-long, I was hoping this wouldn't repeat anything wholesale, so it was good that it didn't. The main verse briefly repeated from 1:08-1:23, albeit with a different drum pattern and different chugs underneath, so some variation was provided.
Though I'm not inherently against fadeout endings, this fadeout ending was a letdown. I would have liked more of an actual conclusion here, but perhaps it's just personal taste. This packs a lot into the 2:15 length, and this was a well-personalized cover. Wouldn't have minded another 30-60 seconds for a finish with more finality, but otherwise everything's clicking here with a very spirited version. Nice work, Daniel! \m/"
Ditto all of that, including the fadeout ending gripe (not ALWAYS a sin, but quite often...) & room for a bit more material. That being said, I also agree with the positives, being that this is a brief but energetic & personalized thrashing of the source tune. Nutritious echoes these sentiments:
"Gonna echo Kris & DA's crits on the overall EQ being high heavy as well as the occasionally out of tune lead. Both aren't dealbreakers, but can be dealt with reasonably easily in post-production. Overall, this is a short & sweet rock rendition of the theme. Boo fadeout ending. It wasn't a super smooth fadeout either with the sudden drop in volume at the very end. I feel like this one just gets by with good performances and arrangement ideas, but it also feels like it leaves quite a bit on the table with the one-and-done fadeout approach."
So there's room for improvement and room for expansion, but it's a solid debut nonetheless from Thrace, who puts his own spin on a popular source & soundtrack. Looking forward to hearing more, and hopefully the judges' feedback resonates a bit and the second mix rocks even harder!

This is one of those ReMixes that I consider "HD" versions of themes, where it takes what I loved about a source theme as a kid and amplifies it, helping me remember what I loved about them in the first place. This mix accomplishes that by getting straight to the point with some rock that was very heavy on the guitars, as a good battle theme should be. Yeah, I wasn't crazy over the fade out, and the short length calls for a case of replay button abuse, but those two things aside, I gotta say I enjoyed the soloing right before the end also. This was a very well arranged ReMix managed to fit a hell of a lot into the length it had, which is great. An honor for K. Rool indeed.

Said it a few times now but again thank you so much for putting this composition through!
It's actually really nice to hear people saying it's too short!
Usually I just assume that people will have really short
attention spans, and because no one really knows me as a
musician, I feel the need to cram in as much as possible into a
short space of time. To a fault really haha.
And the notes about the production are very fair, I definitely
struggle with production.
But this is so sick and I'm so happy people enjoy it! This has
definitely given me a kick up the backside to start creating more
content and to sort out my music accounts.
Watch this space, I'm feeling a Binding of Isaac cover next
Cheers!

This sounds like an arrangement that would appear in a Smash Bros game. It’s so energetic and rocking. It’s too bad that this track is so short. But again, I definitely get a Smash Bros. vibe out of this. So I can forgive the length (as well as the fade out ending).

How in the nine circles of Hell did I miss this? My fav source from DKC + hot damn metal? Hell yeah! Quite short remix, definitively heavier than SnappleMan's classic arrangement. The performance is excellent, the production is very tight too. The fade-out is a little disappointing considering how great the remix sounded. Post more, man! \m/

Definitely short but sweet. I think this is the shortest posted remix in recent years that I've seen. It's solid stuff; I just wish there was more.

This is a Business Remix. It comes in on time, fulfills what it needs to do and doesn't over stay its welcome. This song was written to be remixed as a proper metal track, for future generations, and this Remix fulfills that prophecy quite well. Need I say more?...Yes. I need say one more thing...I've come to love that jaunty little tune that precedes this in game, no love for it? It's doesn't matter, this is some good metal and metal does what metal wants....deal with it
