MORE SUPER CARTOGRAPHY BROS.!!
We just posted our FIRST ReMix from Super Mario 3D World, so it seems only fitting to ALSO be posting our FIRST ReMix from Super Mario 3D Land!! Director Michael "Flexstyle" Birch writes:
"I invited Arceace to the project based on the strength of his Sonic CD (Temporal Duality) and Sonic Zone Remix Competition entries, and I wasn't at all disappointed. This is a true electro banger, with great structure and energy!"
Sick stuff; things intro innocently enough, with a pleasant, happy-go-lucky take on the upbeat source, but as elements slowly filter in, you'd best get ready... for bass... in your FACE. 1'00" drops it, rudely and with zero tact, gurgling, sliding, & badassing (that can be a verb, right? It is now...) all over the place. Wonderful. Arceace (Ben Clifton) maps it all out:
"Since the goal of this album project was to bring attention to some of the lesser-known songs from the Mario series, I figured I would pick a song that I wasn't very familiar with. Until I began working on this project, I had never heard this theme before, and I had never even played Super Mario 3D Land. Both the chord structure and the main melody were elements that really stuck out to me, so I focused heavily on bringing them out in the remix. The song had a very lighthearted charm to it, so I also wanted to make sure to preserve that feeling during the breakdowns. This was a very fun EDM remix to make, and I really enjoyed exploring some of the deeper aspects of sound design for a lot of the sounds."
For Ben & anyone else wondering, Super Mario 3D Land is a great game and well worth your time :) Things outro on a solid, isolated beat, which is a little odd for a radio edit but which signals the emphasis Super Cartography Bros. has on also providing a unified, DJ-friendly package - the zip & torrent both contain alternate "Club Edit" and "DJ Mix" folders that you'll definitely wanna check out for extended cuts & a continuous jam. Peppy, positive stuff from Arceace, which manages to work in a nasty-as-it-wants-to-be bass solo/breakdown and still come off like Mary Poppins ;) Great to see & hear from Ben again, as his Sonic ReMixes & the one Spyro jam were all great, and this bass-infected, sugary electro gem is no exception!

After giving this one a listen, I think I'm honestly more of a fan of this kind of dubstep, where it has charm and a lighter melody that breaks up the actual dub sections, so that when it get aggressive, it has more purpose (even though this one was pretty tame), rather than normal buzzsaw-esque dubstep. It's a nice mix with a good beat, and overall a good addition to a pretty sweet album.

Dubstep is a hit or a miss for me. Unfortunately this is a miss for me, as I only really liked the beginning and the end, which seemed abrupt to me. Only ending with a looped drum sample seemed like an odd choice IMO. I will still recommend this track to people who do like dubstep. If you hate dubstep, you might not even wanna download it. If you can tolerate dubstep, you should download this track. If you love dubstep, then you absolutely must download this.

Intro is very nice. I feel like I've listened to the chord progression somewhere before haha. Change at 1:00 is quite big, breaking the peaceful mood for what almost seems like a Transformer robot haha. The little progression at 1:28 was pretty cool.
I feel a bit troubled about this mix TBH. I really like the calmer parts of it, lead synths sound super pleasant and the backing synths just create a really lovely atmosphere. The heavier part at 1:00 kind of ruins the song a tad for me. Luckily it's the shortest part of the mix so I can say that I really like this overall! Ending was a tad weak though.

Such a pleasant intro. And then a Dirty drop (is that Knife Party bass I hear?). And then somehow fairyland again. The breakdown is pretty cool too; I'm not feeling the drum outro though. Still a good mix.

I'm a pretty darned big dubstep fan, and this mix is way up there with my favorite tracks. The drop was pretty sexy, but no big deal honestly. The breakdown, though - frikin AMAZING, especially the part from 2:15 to 2:30. Chill and dirty at the same time, gotta love it.
someone help me get this song out of my head

Whoa, man, I didn't expect your track to be that dirty! The drop @ 1:00 is so in-your-face. But I love how it picks up after that drop and becomes a bit more sugary. It's definitely your best song now. Keep it up!

When Flex showed me the tracks for the album for further feedback, maybe I didn't mention it back then, but this was one of the more standout tracks for me. Great work!
