ReMix:Golden Axe II "Ravaged Metal" 2:54
By Shinray
Arranging the music of one song...
"Ravaged Village"
Primary Game: Golden Axe II (Sega , 1991, GEN), music by Naofumi HatayaPosted 2016-04-06, evaluated by the judges panel
Shinray debuted on OCR last year and proved the age-old axiom (dating back to the stone age) that Guile's Theme goes with everything, via their intuitively-titled ReMix, "Guile's Theme Goes with Metal" - and it did! Now they're back with a deeper cut, eschewing the more mainstream SF2 world for a sweetly brutal & brutally sweet metal arrangement of Golden Axe 2 that melts face & butts head like a badass dwarf might; Benoit Serraillier writes:
"Shinray are:
- Benjamin Dupré (keyboards)
- Benoit Serraillier (guitar)
- Stéphane Albanese (bass)
- Matthieu Budin (drums)
We're back in the field to submit to you this time another arrangement. It's a metal cover of the first stage's theme from Golden Axe II on Genesis called "Ravaged Village." The arrangement, composing, and mixing have been made by Benjamin Dupré, Matthieu Budin, and Benoit Serraillier."
This is a great source tune which, as luck would have it, arguably goes even BETTER with metal than Guile! Sacrilege? Blasphemy? Nah... Chimpazilla's decision was short but covered the bases:
"This is amazing. Arrangement is conservative, but WOW what great performances. Everything is mixed to perfection. Great genre adaptation, the source lends itself perfectly to metal. Pure awesomness!"
DaMonz corroborates:
"Well, this rocks hard! Cool short-and-sweet arrangement, awesome energy. Amazing performances, great production. I personally think the synth sound design is slightly generic at parts, but the playing is excellent. Guitar playing is splendid, and the melodic explorations are super sweet. The arrangement is pretty close to the original overall, but the flourishes and solos definitely bring enough personalization to the table.
Bottom line: great rocking track! Keep 'em coming! "
It's not every year that I get to write about a Golden Axe ReMix, so I'm just happy 2016 is now one of those years :) As a sidenote, Diggi Dis turned in an equally awesome hybrid arrangement of this same source back in 2010 - check it out! Great follow-up from Shinray which leaves Guile behind, combing his hair on the tarmac, but picks up some new faces for a classic SEGA jam that's well worth your time - I'll echo the judges panel in that I'd love to hear more where this came from!

Good stuff, the mix was tight.
I would have liked to hear some more dramatic changes throughout the tune.
It felt like the piece stayed the same volume the whole remix.

I wasn't too excited about the synth design, but I did think the metal components played around with the rhythm well. The tight playing is another highlight, and that, along with the rhythmic creativity, kept the pacing from getting too repetitive. It's one of those situations where an interesting rhythm keeps things not overly predictable, so you keep wanting to listen to see how it turns out. Nice work! Great solos too.

The mixing on this one is just spot on. Even when the drummer is laying waste to that open hi hat halfway through, it doesn't overpower everything else. My fav part is the drumming going heavy on the toms at 0:38 instead of just relying on the beat from earlier. Didn't actually hear that until the second listen
I'm a sucker for any beat 'em up OSTs and remixes that make me wanna beat up some bad guys/creatures and this one definitely gets me pumped! Lots of tasty rhythms and leads tightly packed into 3 minutes. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to their YouTube channel...*scurries away*

I loved the video AND the song, lots of personality in this song. Kudos.

Interpretation's on the ball with this one. I'm totally into the material that flows naturally out of Ravaged Village at 1:27 and 2:00. The backup guitar studiously creates expressive countermelodies that grow beyond the bass melody of the source.
Compared to the deliciously hot synthrock leads, the percussion's a tad soft (notably the cymbal hits), but it makes up for that with its flexibility: the drumwork at first appears on-the-beat basic until decisive moments and transitions cue it out of its comfort zone to act both faithful and enrichening.
Superb stuff, though I gotta say: poor Aerith. She's treated like a villain and didn't get to integrate her meows with the song in the video until the end.

Well, first of all, thanks a lot for sharing this!
We also did a video with this where we covered the intro in a symphonic then funky fashion.
Check it out if you want.
