Arranging the music of one song...
"Ridley's Chamber"
Primary Game: Metroid (Nintendo , 1986, NES), music by Hirokazu TanakaPosted 2016-06-01, evaluated by the judges panel
Redg (Brent Wollman) has a distinct, unapologetic style that focuses on extreme sound design & a more experimental/experiential approach to arrangement... you can't dance to it, it's not easy listening, and it's probably not for everyone, but if you close your eyes and/or listen in complete darkness on a decent set of headphones, he achieves very specific textures that are unnerving, dynamic, complex, and which often manage to evoke the atmospheres & characters of the games being arranged without emphasizing melodic or even harmonic content.
Think of his ReMixes almost like the auditory equivalent of an optical illusion, and that's a good start...
Here he takes on a previously unmixed source from the original Metroid, delving deep into the psychosis of Ridley with a twisted & tortured minimalist electronic/ambient descent into madness:
"The dragon lies ruined in his lair, but the depth of his lust will form new incarnations. I could never truly see until I strained to view the perfect shadows he languished. My eyes were open wide to find their value in a pitch black eclipse. Ears deafened by the screaming vacuum, his dying rage.
Source usage is straight up... opens with the main melody and persists with arp figure.
This piece is an exploration of the ridley character. I was thinking about his various appearances throughout the metroid canon . . . a space-faring pirate repeatedly resurrecting, living and dying on intergalactic corruption."
Very poetic, which is appropriate, because thinking of Redg's mixes as dark, unstable, & explorative sound poems makes a LOT of sense. Some of the sustained whines & creaks here are bloodcurdling, sure, but if you can listen and focus WHILE your blood curdles, you'll hear how they evolve, how overtones develop, and how the overall soundscape morphs... it's quite cool. Chimpazilla's visceral, coronary comments echo the vibe:
"This is a track that actually forces me to revisit the definition of music as the "arrangement of sounds across time" because that's literally what is happening here. This track is really more like one long atmo clip than what I'd call a "song." That said, I love it. This track punches into my chest and rips my heart out, then shows it to me still beating before eating it in front of me."
My goodness, Kris! I like it. Palpable adds:
"I love you, Brent - no one sends us stuff like this... I feel like the unorthodox approach you take for remixing also suits the Metroid OST very well, so it's possible on some level that is making me feel more of a connection (maybe tackle Earthbound sometime too!)."
The phrase "gritty reboot" is a little overused, but I think Vinnie's point about this style lending itself to Metroid is spot-on, and these are the type of textures & this is the type of pain that would make Ridley "real" for me, personally. Your mileage can & will vary, but if you want something "off the beaten path" that delves into the psychological & turns it into pure sound, Brent has crafted another dark therapy session for you!

Oh yes, this source is fantastic. This offputing mix is psychedelic and reminds me of CotMM's work; great job twisting stuff up.

How fortunate! I just happened to drop by to listen to Holy Mother (2353) when away from my regular computer, and I saw this in the sidebar and said 'hey, Metroid 1!' and then it was a remix of Ridley's lair, which has been sorely neglected, and I caught it only 9 days after release!
Anyway, this is properly creepy. I like all of the effects except for the momentary volume fadeout around 0:50. The disintegration fits with the long-term theme of Ridley as described in the intro. I was somewhat surprised that only the parallel-whole-tone sequences remained through the bulk, with the melody generally absent.

I think it could have used more varied texture, but I like the general direction. I admire the oddball composers such as György Ligeti, and even more modern ones like Jasna Veličković, and I think people interested in creating this sort of music should study the work of people like those. I wouldn't listen to this sort of music all day, but it's an excellent change of pace and I'm glad it's here.

Ohh wow... I love so so so much twisted ambiance. I remember listening to Cancer a whole ton of time and this one will be on my playlist for a long time. I'd love to see Brent have his take on the whole Metroid OST and released as an album. I'd pay a lot of money for that! Long story short. this is a phenomenal remix!
Thanks a lot,
Xavier

Would you believe me if I said I had a similar idea for a creepy, ambient Ridley mix? That 3 note motif that plays throughout seems ideal for some atmospheric interpretation. Anyways, you really did the idea justice.

Man, the sound design just nails an unnerving feel perfectly. Sure, it's dissonant, but it's done tastefully. Pushes the boundary of pleasant-enough sound design (in terms of abrasive timbre), but for me it's just about right.
Today, I'd probably define music as "the logical sequence and combination of tonal and atonal sounds to generate a harmonic experience." Yeah, this counts.
I honestly found this to fit more as a track in an OST than as a remix, since you generally have more freedom in an OST, but this can be some fun listening in the dark.

Oh, Brent! Once again he proves that he's truly the master of twisted and weird music! This track is a typical example of how brlliant his mind is! It even freaked me out at first, but I'm additcted to Brent's magic of mangled soundscapes so much that I've already listened to this masterpiece about 10 times. It caught my attention right at the beginning - those spooky sounds are excellent! And that beat which appears at about 1:10 is very cool as well. I know that most people (on Youtube at least) will probably dislike such music, but I always want more stuff from this man! Great!
