Arranging the music of 2 songs from 2 games ( view all )...
"Dancing Mad", "Under the Duchy's Banner"
Primary Game: Final Fantasy VI (Square , 1994, SNES), music by Nobuo UematsuPosted 2016-06-15, evaluated by the judges panel
GO BIG OR GO HOME!! HeavenWraith (Antanas Palaitis) has clearly opted for the former with this mix, i.e. you won't find him at home:
"My second attempt at symphonic metal take on "Dancing Mad"... with bonus content from Bravely Default. I think the two themes blended together quite well. The mixing stage of the production process took the most time and effort, however, provided a lot of experience - next time, I'll know not to do 50% stuff I did this time around. Picking Nightwish as a role model for mixing/mastering was a really bad idea, mainly because I don't have the excuse of saying "Hey, you can hear the soloist vocals, right? Who the hell cares if you can't tell apart every instrument/voice of the orchestra/choir."
On a brighter note, I think it turned out quite well overall. Choir harmony turned out good, orchestra (though not always noticeable) gives a nice touch, and the guitar solos, though not the best I've made, turned out quite well. The sources nicely reinforced the punchy feel of the piece.
Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately?), the FL Studio project file of this track got corrupted and channel wrappers were giving me random crashes, thus I decided to export MIDI/audio of the track and plaster it on one of my newer symphonic metal templates. After some tinkering here and there, the track revamp is complete, although I lost some of the original feeling of the piece, but what can one do... The overall sound seems to be better anyway."
Well, I'm glad we received a submission at all, given some of the technical difficulties; interesting blend of themes and extensive use of latin choral phrasing coupled with metal, providing a take on an oft-mixed source that still seems new & different. High-energy, high-octane, and not particularly interested in being subtle, this is a fun romp that marries edgy metal with ensemble choral & symphonic work that blends nicely, as does the additional source integration from Bravely Default; Sir_NutS writes:
"The Dancing Mad opening was amazing, the transitions into the Bravely Default portions were natural, and surprisingly in line with the mood set by Dancing Mad. The guitar performances are on point, offering edge to the song, and that solo was INTENSE. The church organ sections fit both sources extremely well and add the air of pending doom from Dancing Mad. This song in general evokes a One Winged Angel feel and I totally approve of that."
Gario adds:
"Damn, a nice Bravely Default mix, blending it with some Dancing Mad. You can't go wrong with such a combination, and you got tones of spirit and energy through and through. It's a great arrangement, blending the themes nearly flawlessly."
Judges did pick at some production issues, most prominently the guitar tone used and the degree to which it complements the accompaniment, but most felt these were handily overcome by the strength of the arrangement & performance, and also the sheer momentum & force that the mix packs. Great stuff from Antanas - glad he pulled through and resurrected/revised this mix, because I think a lot of people will enjoy it quite a bit!

Nice symphonic metal or whatever this style is called! Guitar playing is sick and I love the organ and choirs. Love how powerful the arrangement and mixing is and how you blended the sources, I didn't even notice it was more than Dancing Mad until I read the description.

Hm... I'm definitely loving the overall soundscape here. The toms could have had a bit less low end to clear up the low-mids overall, and the kick was a bit "flabby", but not really a big deal. I actually liked the guitar tone, which aggressively shines through at 2:45. The mix was a tad cluttered, but I could still make out most elements, so I'm happy with it overall. The arrangement is clearly well-conceived, and pretty well-executed. Awesome!

Thanks for all the comments, I'm happy the track made someone's day better
I just noticed a few technical issues with the mix post so I figured I'd report.
1) My last two Bravely Default mixes seem to be posted under two different games, see screenshot:
2) There is a mistake in the lyrics that I made in my first submission email. I fixed it in my second submissions email, but never pointed that out (my bad), so the wrong lyrics got posted. This applies to both mixpost page and youtube video description.
Paragraph 4, the word in bold needs to be removed:
Sotiya forte distanda diverta nihanye.
(Sopranos/Altos) Maya farado.
(Tenors/Basses) Maya kavera nihaye farado.
Sotiya forte distanda diverta nihanyama, fanimaya winasoye!
Thanks.
1) No worries, that's correct. The source tune for Virgin Mojito's was exclusive to the international version of the game (no subtitle). Most of BD's songs would fall under the original JP release of the game (Flying Fairy), though the game association for any ReMixes of it would likely be the international version that most artists played. Sounds complicated, but everything's OK.
2) Will get those lyrics fixes later, thanks for that!

I'm a sucker for "Dancing Mad", and getting something arranged with Bravely Default? Sold!

This one is a must listen. I can't believe how well this comes through. This isn't epic, it's like... high epic, with all the splendor and power of a regal procession that turns into a brawl in the throne room at 2:45. Really, I'm stunned at how these elements blended together. If you had told me about it in words, I would have said it would have been extremely difficult to pull it off. This doesn't just succeed, it surpasses it. Bonus props for a memorable beginning AND ending! An instant download. What an accomplishment!

Really nailed the solo section, especially the organ (obvious sound choice for this but still, sweet). I agree that the tone is a bit gritty for this style but great job handling technical errors and submitting a quality mix regardless.

I'm a sucker for this style of music, even though Dancing Mad has been done to death using it, the Bravely Default source added in keeps it interesting. ("Under the Duchy's Banner" is missing from the remix info, though.)
I can see why the judges considered it muddy, but it's a highly entertaining remix and I'm glad it got posted.
