Arranging the music of one song...

"Cammy Stage"

Primary Game: Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers (Capcom , 1993, ARC), music by Isao Abe, Shun Nishigaki, Yoko Shimomura

First things first: we love the mix title :)

Hailing from Australia, newcomer shaboogen (Marc Losper) debuts on OCR with what is ALSO his first real complete track as a musician, which is pretty cool! This hard-hitting EDM take on Cammy that features four-on-the-floor beats, razor electro bass, and (my favorite inclusion) some very slick marching band-style field snares:

"First real tune. Really happy with the way it's turned out. This was made in Logic Pro X 10.2 using mostly stock effects/compressor plugins, KV331 SynthMaster and a SID-based lead sampled straight from a Commodore 64.

The Cammy theme has always been my favourite in all of Street Fighter. With this piece, I take the spirit of the original and fuse it with my favourite modern dance genre in complextro in order to create a track designed to be light, fun and, above all, groovy as hell. My goal was to create a version of the song that suited both my own sensibilities as a lover of funky and fun electro and still encapsulated everything that I loved about the original song.

I submitted a remix of this tune previously, but was knocked back and asked to resubmit. My original had a lot of problems, so I decided to essentially rebuild it. With regards to the original judges' decision, the prevailing feedback seemed to be focused on the arrangement (specifically the lack of variation in the drum pattern) as opposed to the production quality itself. To address this, I did spend some time focusing on producing a more ambitious arrangement. I added a new percussion line that changes at various points in the song in order to add more interest. I also modified the original B section into a full breakdown, preceded by a small half-time section in order to break up monotony.

Although there wasn't a great deal said about the production itself, on reflection there were a lot of things that were below par so I went back and cleaned up all the synths and EQs along with giving the track a fresh master. The new version (to my ears anyway) has significantly more clarity and allows all the sounds more room to shine through and should hopefully deal with any issues with regards to shrillness or mud.

To be a little clearer, I was a very new producer when I sent my first tune through and I know now that it was very premature in my development. Hopefully, these new changes bring the tune more in line with OCR standards. I hope that you find it compelling and worthy of being a part of OCR."

You know, I really love this attitude & approach to feedback - Marc digested what we had to say, decided on what he agreed with, and came back much stronger the second time around. The percussive additions are clutch, add a whole extra dimension to the mix, & help differentiate it... besides just sounding pretty dope. Chimpazilla helped with the mastering on this submission, and had this to say:

"Marc sent me a new version with improved mixing. His mastering was on the quiet side, so I mastered it more and sent it to him. He approved of what I did, so he sent me his unmastered WAV so I could master it up right. I still feel like there are structural improvements he could make to his track and we have discussed them, but this track is sounding mighty good now. I think Marc will do big things at OCR!"

Nice alley-oop; with a strong debut set of skills and a willingness to analyze and selectively incorporate feedback, that's certainly a recipe for success, so here's hoping we hear more & that Kris is right! While a bit more structural variety is a good goal for the future, this mix brings the energy, is easy to get into, and also packs some surprises... getting your face remodelled never sounded so good :)

Howdy all, thanks for the kind words.

To clarify the "first timer" thing, the version that you're hearing is a heavy revision that was 6 months removed from the first one that was submitted. The first submission was literally my first tune using modern production techniques, and was significantly worse :)

Also, while I'm pretty new to modern production techniques (DAWs, VSTs etc) I've played instruments for a lot of years, and also have a not-insignificant amount of experience using trackers.

So yeah, let's say "newer", not first :)

Enjoying the props anyway though,

First-time? Well this blows any of my first-times out of the water.

First-timer? Really? I couldn't tell, 'cause...I like this. A lot. This remix comes in fast and hot, enjoyable right off the bat. See what I did there? I totally didn't mean to. Anyway, I have to agree with Chimpzilla. Shaboogen has made an excellent remix, and I hope to see a lot more in the future!

I'll be honest - I saw the title and thought "this is going to be metal. Cuz face-melting." When I read "complextro", I also expected a, well, complex breakdown, but ah well. Very energetic, funky, and in-your-face. This pretty much stands on its own as a ReMix + Club Mix at the same time. ;)
