Newcomer Paper Coelacanth (Owen W.) offers up a creative & cool EDM arrangement of Silent Hill 2, with a dnb backbone and some dubstep & other EDM genre staples thrown into the mix:
"It's been a few years since I last tackled a video game remix, and, after trying to improve my own sound through more originals and general growth, I've come to realize I've missed it. So this is my first completed attempt at getting back into it. Finally resubmitting a remix that I've been working on for quite a while. Last time, there were concerns about the melody not being close enough, so I think I managed to get it closer to the original this time! I also changed some of the synth sounds, added to the drop, and a few other details that came up last time I submitted.
My main intention was to keep at least some of the haunting, melancholy feel of Akira Yamaoka's work while trying to add an extra bitterness to the tune (especially with the drop). This is actually the first time I've completed anything in this particular style. I've submitted a couple times before under a different name and I wasn't quite up to par, so I'm hoping my progress since then has made my work more suitable!"
It definitely has; this is pretty slick stuff that does a good job of marrying mellower, sparser dnb segments with explosive barrages of bass & FX. Of the resub, and the original effort being a little too liberal, Gario writes:
"From what I gather on the last submission of this track it was too liberal. Going through the source and this arrangement, it sounds like you've more than made up for it - the chords that are struck throughout are consistent with both what chords are used in the source and how they're used, and the melodic parts either play many parts of the source themes close to note-for-note, or with more fills and melodic variation. Either way, I think it holds enough source to cover it in that regard."
Sir_NutS wasn't digging the drops & felt things could have been tighter & more aggressive, but was still feeling the overall:
"All the other sections besides the drop worked very well for me, they're melodically rich and the synth sounds worked very well, creating a nice atmosphere that works for the adaptation. As mentioned above the drums sequencing was very detailed and never lost itself in doing too much or just going too random."
A lot of Silent Hill arrangements go for darker genres like metal, ambient, etc., so it's kinda just cool to see someone taking SH2 in a brisker, more energetic direction. I dug the drops, personally - while they aren't that assertive by modern standards, they help break up the structure and widen the palette, and I didn't find them jarring from an aesthetic perspective, relative to the rest. Good stuff from Owen, glad he's stuck with it & glad he revised this piece in particular - hope to hear more!

This has a cool sort of Persona vibe to it. Like a blissful solitary walk at night.

I'm going to back Crulex here - I think the overarching element that I find I really like is how the remixer is able to interweave a quieter, darker dnb in with the melodic elements - 2:20-2:40 really stand out for me as a great example. I iimagine that, for some people who like dark ambience, dnb/dubstep is not what they want, and for some who like a harder dubstep, melodic overlay is just distracting. But I want the remixer to know that this works - it's a really good, unique interpretation of the tune, and I found myself hitting repeat a couple of times on it just to hear its interesting interweaving of the styles. Give this a spin - it's a unique take with great execution!

Interesting. I actually quite like the dnb backing on this track, and the drop and energetic dubs hitting didn't bother me. It is pretty sweet to hear a Silent Hill track taken in a different direction like this and really given a rearrangement that has a good beat with solid production. The best part is nothing soundwise was overbearing or too loud, which is awesome for mixes like this that have electronic elements. Not bad at all, I like this one.
