Newcomer OverShield (Dean Kontos) gives Walter White a run for his money & catalyzes some mean dubstep/EMD chemistry with this ingame-FX & DSP-laden arrangement of "Chemical Plant Zone" from Sonic 2:
"I have been a fan of the video game music you choose to upload for quite some time now and would love to have the opportunity for one of my tracks to make it up there as well!
My main inspiration to remix this track is because it's the first game I grew up playing as a kid. I love the original arrangement so much, I thought it would be fun to put my own EDM twist to it. It starts off with a mysterious intro and ends with a punch. I also used familiar sounds from the game to try and audibly simulate Sonic interacting with the level.
I know this song has been remixed before, but I hope you hear it as something different and enjoy it!"
Never let a source tune's popularity steer you away from putting your own spin on it; pun intended. This one's on my personal to-do list, as well, as it's one of my favorite Sonic cuts; Dean does a great job playing with expectations and letting the chemicals run amok with plentiful tape stop FX, hard cuts, fakeouts, glitching, and generally tweaked sonic mayhem. Sir_NutS had a couple nitpicks along with spot-on analysis & praise:
"Inventive arrangement here with plenty of sfx used to spice things up. I have two issues with this one, the sidechain gets a bit too aggressive at some points, and the main melody disappears behind some of the noise/airy sfx. Regarding the arrangement I'm very happy the remixer took a lot of care in the mangling and splicing of the chemical zone theme and wasn't just happy with playing the source verbatim over the new edm base, which is something you hear often in the remixing community.
Regarding the production, besides the issues mentioned above, it all seemed pretty clean and well-crafted. You gave everything its own space, drums were coming up crystal clear and punchy. Overall great rendition of this classic theme in a style that I can't really place in any other edm genre, but that likes to bounce between dubstep, future bass, complextro, and others. Good stuff."
Well said; definitely avoids falling into a staple genre groove for more than a few bars, but makes that oscillation work in its favor instead of seeming non-committal. It's the chemicals, okay? They burn. Great, fun, unique, and well-produced debut on OverClocked from OverShield ;) Hope to hear more, soon!

Dude, hell of a debut mix right here. Probably one of the most aggressive and determined versions of this tune I've ever heard, and hearing the SFX spliced into the song reminded me of when Willrock used some of the game's SFX for the intro of his Clockwork Criminal ReMix a while back. I really liked how you integrated the SFX into the mix so that it sounded like a play through of the stage, especially when the music muted when it sounded like it was going through the water at around 2:30. That was cool. The harder rocking section at the end was awesome, my favorite section easily. Hope we hear more from you!

For the longest time, Jivemaster's version was my fave remix of this song but you have totally blown that one out of the water! The intro is very Megaman-ish which is great. The use of SFX from the game was brilliant and I like the inclusion of a guitar at the end--really badass! My fave part was at the 1:30 mark. Great work!

Since this source should go on the top-10 of "songs with incredible remix potential" - and I'd place it pretty high up this list, behind maybe only Schala's Theme - I have to give the remixer props on the spot-on handling of the sfx by placing it in the context of the song. I never felt like I was just being hit with sfx for the sake of sfx, if that makes sense - the handling of 2:05, particularly with the finish at 2:25, is a great example of this and left me very impressed.
There's a lot going on here, and a distinct take on the theme, which should be all the more significant for the source. Well done!
