If spring isn't the PERFECT time to promote OverClocked University's Spring Break DJ Set, what is??
We've given our website a bit of a spring cleaning, too, and plan on continuing that trend throughout the year. For NOW though, it's time to roll the windows down, switch from pants to shorts, get some refreshing beverages, and enjoy the weather! This upbeat folk/tropical EDM Mario Kart Wii arrangement (our first from the game!) from OCU (OceansAndrew, Level 99, DragonAvenger) is just the ticket; Andrew writes:
"The newest OverClocked University album was based on the concept of spring break, so it needed a really sunny and upbeat centerpiece. After a bit of debate, the "Maple Treeway" theme from Mario Kart Wii was chosen, and given an arrangement that is one part acoustic guitar and one part hyper-speed reggaton run through the OCU filter. What came out doesn't really sound like either of the original components, but has a ton of charm and feels very Mario Kart. Originally, a lot of the chords were just noodling on top of the root, so I added in a more interesting bassline and chord progression.
The delicious cake (that Princess Peach may have baked) is frosted with a guitar solo breakdown, and sprinkled with some backing vocals from Andrew and Deia."
EXCELLENT track; probably my favorite from OCU... has a clean, positive, & energetic tropical vibe going on, mixes in some varied acoustic/electronic instrumentation very effectively, and stays *interesting* thoughout. A lot of times with appealing & accessible tracks like this, there's a tendency to set things on autopilot and coast, but the harmonic modulations and shifting leads prevent ANY stagnation whatsoever. So it's carefree, chill, & enjoyable without being predictable or cookie-cutter, which is all sorts of good in my book. Zero nits to pick; this captures the open, fun spirit of Mario Kart while also transforming the source into something new, it's well-produced, there are tons of points of interest & details in the accompaniment, and the whole ReMix just feels very ALIVE - perfect for spring, break or not. Highly recommended; check it out, & support OCU by checking out the album!

A solid tropical mix with a lot of fun energy, especially with the vocalizations. Some of woodwind instruments still managed to keep some of that original Autumn feeling from the original track, so it felt familiar but new, perfect for a mix. Really enjoyed this one.

Listening to this one quite a lot recently. It's such a fun, pleasant track. Really hits its stride around 0:45. The vocal effects are well done too.

Sweet summer athmosphere, nice choice of sounds and good mix. Feels a bit "stompy" though; too much emphasis on the straight beats. I'm missing some offbeat hihat or syncopated rhythms.

Breezy and perfect or coasting around. A bit and with a rather bland ending, but good spring fodder.
