Double Dose of DaMonz!! His latest EP, Kirby's Liberation Service, just dropped on OC Records yesterday, so it's ALMOST like we planned it :) First up is this dark, frenetic, prog-chip-synth-dnb-fusion SMRPG ReMix from Window to the Stars:
"It's me again! :D I'm back with some more prog weirdness! This is my first track for the album, and I have a very strong attachment to this game, so I wanted to make sure I did it justice as well as I could.
Smithy gives me the creeps. I think he's probably the most underrated sociopath character in video games. I mean, who just barges in from space in a gigantic sword just to mess things up? This guy.
So, yeah, I wanted my ReMix to feel... sociopathic. I wanted to make sure the track never really settled anywhere and always kept moving and morphing, to illustrate Smithy's shapeshifting abilities. I wanted the listener to keep getting surprised the whole time. I think I managed to reach my goals, and I hope you'll agree. :) In any case, please enjoy!"
I wanted MY ReMix on the album to feel sadistic, and Emery wanted his to feel sociopathic... good times :) This is almost experimental at times, though it retains enough of a prog/dbn skeleton to be relatable... really cool filtering and spazzy chord hits and modulated reverbs and what not, keeping things unpredictable. Palpable offers his diagnosis:
"Sociopathic is right. I always thought the original song was strange, but this takes it to level 10 in a crazy synth-prog adevnture. The atmospheric intro sets the tone of the piece with trippy FX, pitch bends, and distortion color, leading into an unexpectedly peppy D&B-like section. Reverb drifts in and out; instruments range from complex, multi-layered, floaty synths to barebones NES chip. The whole picture is pretty disorienting. 1:52 is kind of a welcome reprieve from the madness, starting with an ambient pad section that gradually adds the crazy back. If you want a perfect example of the mad genius at work here, check out the 4:03 section. Does my head in."
Fun! ...in a manic, sinister sort of way. DaMonz has uptempo, elaborate, proggish jamsplosions DOWN, and he mixes in some dark & menacing modulations on DSP to shock you out of complacency & shake your proverbial booty. Great stuff which embraces a personalized characterization of the source BGM's subject matter, Smithy, in a creative & breakneck fashion!

Remembering that the background for this fight looked like robot hell, the menacing atmosphere underneath a warping drum and bass arrangement is highly fitting. Not overly aggressive or loud, but persistent and frantic. Amazing ReMix from the album.

the atmospheric start and a lot of the drum work makes this feel like a battle theme from super metroid
then there's all the other fun d'n'b nonsense piled on top. i quite enjoy this

Nailed the vibe! Loving the frenetic nature of the arrangement; the one thing I wish is that the drums at the drops were heavier. Cool harmonies though!
