RoeTaKa (Alex Roe) hits us with more of his signature Souls work, going dark, suspenseful, orchestral, & choral:
"No surprises here, back again with more Dark Souls! I'm always excited for these games. Just like Bloodborne before it with Borne in Blood, I wrote an original album inspired by Dark Souls called Darksign, which I had a blast making, and now I get to do remixes now that the game is out! Loved the game, great soundtrack, and I chose my favourite song from it to remix first.
I expected to be writing remixes from Dark Souls 3 shortly after playing it, but I haven't really been able to get into a musical mood until recently, which really bummed me out. I played the game a ton, it's really good. I even did my first SL1 run of the game. This is probably my favourite song from the soundtrack. There are some really good ones, but I love the more emotional tracks and "Abyss Watchers" hits that spot for me.
The second phase of this song, which is not on the official soundtrack, mostly reiterates the melody in phase 1, but with a much more somber tone, so I kind of set that aside and did something faithful to the original but with a bit more drive and energy to it. I also used a portion of "Knight Artorias" from Dark Souls 1 at 2:59, since in the game it is heavily implied that this character is the Abyss Watchers' master, and I thought that would be a neat touch to bridge back into the original song. Hope you enjoy it!"
Evaluator Chimpazilla writes:
"Really beautifully crafted song, full of passion and drive. Gets a little conservative during the part with the female vocal, but the two themes are woven very well together and it's just beautiful."
Not MUCH more to say; many if not all of the descriptive superlatives I've used for Alex's previous arrangements in this vein apply, although I found the choral components here to be more pronounced and a definite highlight. This is also a comparatively suspenseful piece, with more anticipation and less brooding, but even there, he's done so much substantive & varied work surrounding these games that there are plenty of other exceptions as well. When it comes to the Souls series and Bloodborne too, we have been thoroughly spoiled, and I can't think of many parallels where one ReMixer has so deeply mined the music of a franchise & channeled such an evocative arsenal of interpretations. Superb stuff!

Really, really like that this remixer isn't resting on his laurels - I am noticing growth and intriguing development as these mixes come out. The build from 3:35 to the crescendo at 4:45 is, by far, one of the best sequences I've heard in months, and I think the atmospheric finish is just perfect. djpretzel nailed the concept that we are spoiled to have someone be able to both 1) love a series and 2) be able to translate that love into his remixes. What a wonderful gift!
The work that this remixer does with mood and feel is largely unrivaled. Thanks so much for sharing.
