Crazy, man. As enjoyable as "Springtime Smoothness" is, this funk/rock/jazz explosion arranging "Chrome Gadget Zone" from Sonic 3 takes it up a notch.

Chrome Gadget:

  • Guitar, Synth, Keys, Arrangement - Leandro Abreu
  • Bass - Leo Quintão
  • Drums - Helton Lima
  • Trumpet - Marco Lima
  • Bass Trombone - André Pastore

Right out of the gate we open with JUST a brass duet with subtle delay, which is then succeeded by an undulating symbiotic relationship between bass & organ before the full groove hits at 0'31" - not just a strong opening, but unique & memorable and "coloring outside the lines" a bit more. More dynamic drumming, with plenty of fills and accents, and then check the rapid-fire bass action at 1'28" - fun! Right after that we get a smeared classic rock organ riff circa 1'32" from Leandro, transitioning into a more funk breakdown with some delicious bass solos from Leo. Contrasted with "Springtime Smoothness" this arrangement is a bit more dynamic & indulgent, in nothing but good ways :) Guitar melts face around 2'25" and Helton works in some quick drum solos/fills... the tradeoffs between performers and the interplay between parts is FIRE. Larry was sold on everything but the ending:

"Pretty flat ending without a thought out resolution, which was a letdown, but this was an otherwise strong, smooth jazzy cover with great original part-writing integrated into the picture, which is par for the course with Abreu Project for sure. Fun energy and a spirited, personalized performance as always!"

I think of this as less "smooth" and more rock-infused & even aggressive at bits, and the ending is definitely a YMMV proposition: I personally dug that it built up expectations then had a low bass slide downwards right where the final POP would be... playfully avoids a foregone conclusion :) Two stellar ReMixes from Leandro and the amazing musicians he works with; the first is everything you'd expect from them - which makes it fantastic - but this Sonic 3 jam hits me a bit harder due to the twists, turns, & edgier influences. Superb!

I've never been the world's biggest Sonic fan, but I'll be damned if almost all the Sonic mixes on the site are amazing, and this miniature remix flood just adds more evidence.

You can argue that the ending is a little bit flat, but honestly I'd rather have what happened in this track then just a simple fadeout. Everything here is just so good (on the heels of two other remixes that are also JUST SO GOOD)… Like DimeTower said, we're not worthy of this groove. :D

Get listening – you're going to have fun listening to musicians have fun with talent to spare.

I listen to this piece and I feel like it's so impressively groovy that I'm not even worthy to groove to it. I don't even know if that made sense. But this piece just seems to be so polished. Really impressive playing here too, I must add!
