Arranging the music of one song...
"Mining Town"
Primary Game: Final Fantasy VII (Sony , 1997, PS1), music by Nobuo UematsuPosted 2018-03-26, evaluated by the judges panel
Bluelighter (Guillaume Saumande) starts the week off for us with a bouyant, darkly energetic solo piano arrangement of "Mining Town" from FF7 that plays with time signatures a bit & oscillates between delicate and emphatic:
"This is a new version of my arrangement of "Mining Town," recorded in a better quality. "Mining Town" is really my favorite track from the game. In this very simple piece, N. Uematsu has known putting a lot of emotion. So, I've made a piano version of this. Globally, I tried to keep purity of original piece. Beginning and ending are very peaceable; 2nd part (50'') has a more accentuated rhythm and brings a darker section (1'25). The melody is then played lower with a rhythm in 5/8, more stressful. The song finished quietly by the second melodic line of the original. I've also corrected the middle part that I've played too quickly in the last version. Enjoy. :D"
Beautiful stuff; this is a revision based on panel feedback & features a cleaner recording that does the arrangement/performance justice. I dig the syncopation and time signature work, but also the elegance of the quieter, more intimate moments juxtaposed against powerful left-hand chords and forward momentum; we talk about "dynamic contrast" a lot for a reason, and it's even more important for solo piano pieces. Liontamer writes:
"Now this strong arrangement is sounding solid. I was one of the Js who heard the previous version, so I'm proud to say you did a great job pulling this one up, Guillaume! Thank you for revisiting it."
DragonAvenger adds:
"This is a fun arrangement, and not something I would have expected. I appreciate the changes between the dynamics and flow of the piece; it really keeps the track interesting."
I was less familiar with this source than many of FF7's "greatest hits" - this is actually our first featured arrangement of this particular theme - and while it might not be my favorite on the entire OST (which is large & amazing), I can see the appeal. Kudos to Guillaume for an expressive, interesting, & enjoyable arrangement and for taking the time to refine it just a bit more and let it shine!

Wow, this is just wonderful. This takes what is already a nice, interesting piece and makes it into a practical suite. The handling of 1:05-2:32 has such power, and then 2:33 on changes it into such an amazing, delicate touch! In short, this really explores the piece and delivers a top-notch handling of a less common piece. I'm really, really impressed by the quality of the remix here - well done!!

THIS TRACK IS AMAZING. Unless you're actually allergic to piano, this is a must listen. In fact, it's cool, just stop reading right now and listen to it, my rambling will still be here when you're done.
I'm particularly in love with the choice of song, because everyone knows almost every single track in Final Fantasy VII has been remixed to hell and back… Well, maybe not hell, but the remixes spent some time with Sephiroth in the core of the planet. Of course that really speaks to how great of a soundtrack it is, but it's definitely refreshing to hear new material that hasn't really been done that often. Mining Town has been one of those pieces that has always stuck with me yet has relatively few remixes. Also, because who doesn't love nostalgia, before I even hit play, it really brought me back to playing through the game for the 1st time all the events that take place there, especially Barrett's back story.
Back to this remix, however, it's those story moments that really seemed to inspire the remixer to have a very particular impact, especially in regards to the emotional tension. Particularly the section that winds things up starting at about the 1:25 mark, and really reaches fever pitch around 1:50. Contrasts the rest of the work beautifully and dynamically, especially when it returns to the delicate piano at 2 1/2 minutes or so. It's a great ride, backed by equally great arranging and work on the keys (to my untrained ears anyway). I daresay this easily ranks amongst the top tracks in this genre/style ever released on the website.
