SF30! Represent. Rukunetsu gives us our first SFA/SFZ ReMix in a long while with this industrial/rock ReMix that juxtaposes booming, dystopian drums & synth bass with electric guitar and jazzier chords & trance-gate synths:
"Concept mix for Gouki in Tekken 7 (which is a remix of this Shin Gouki theme from Alpha 3, lol). A remix of "Groan" done in a style that would fit within the Tekken world, being that 'ol Gouki's making an appearance in Fated Retribution. Tried to retain that ominous feel of the original but add more of an electronic/updated sound to it... while mixing in just a TOUCH of his original theme from SSFII. I couldn't quite capture the tension that the original "Groan" did, but thought I'd share the mix regardless. Hope you all enjoy.
Atmospheric, dark, & tense, but with chords that paradoxically have a sorta mellow jazz thing going on; not uncommon in the VGM world, and amplified here for a striking balance. Gario concurs:
"Atmosphere galore! Those cluster chords in the pads, the sparse (yet effective) textures, the gating effects... This has a whole lot going for it."
Taikos & glitching round out the arsenal, and all elements are used wisely. MindWanderer adds:
"Interesting soundscape. That grungy synth combined with those crisp wood blocks and the heavily reverbed synths that come in later create a truly layered effect. Usually the discrepant effects would be cause for criticism, but here it's effective in creating a unique feel.
There's a little bit of repetition, especially 0:48-1:10 and 1:48-2:10, which other than a key change sound identical. Mostly each repetition of a section has some significantly different treatment that keeps it fresh.
Yeah, not a whole lot more to say here. It's a bit strange, but it accomplishes exactly what it's meant to. Nice job."
Agreed; this ain't a hummin' piece or dancin' piece so much, but it's certainly sinister & stark, and blends some choice ingredients to create something new while paying compositional & textural homage to SFA3, SSFII, and Tekken at the same time. Good stuff!

Definitely hearing the Tekken Akuma concept through the arrangement, and while I'm glad for the little bit of original Akuma theme being included in the mix, Groan really lent itself to the idea really well. Not bad.

What I really like in this mix is the sense of distance it conveys. The gritty synths, the guitar(ish) lead pushed pretty far into the background, the 'slapback' reverb of the snare, these work really well together (I can see where Gario's comment about the snare 'verb being a touch much comes from, but really didn't think about it while listening to the tune. A tone-down might make it better, but wasn't really bothered as it is).
I do feel like the woodblocks are very much disconnected from the rest of the soundscape, at least on my cheap headphones. It's a bit like I'm trying to listen to this song and somebody clanks stuff together in the kitchen. I just didn't get it, but I do see MindWanderer complimented the very same thing in the panel thread.
The 'hanging' guitar note at 1:12 feels off key to me. (Similarly the 'tail' of the previous section at 2:35-2:36 conflicts with the next part). I don't like 1:28-1:29 harmonically much either. The same with 3:04-3:06 and 3:16-3:18. Not sure anything is 'wrong' with that part, but it jumps out to me.
The key change at 1:35- is superbly cool. It sort of recontextualizes the material through repeating it in the different key. The 'hanging tail' of the previous part works well there.
