ReMix:Deltarune "Funk Buster" 3:30

Hanging Waters gave us "Groove Buster" back in January, and now newcomer Kamex (Erick Nunez) politely busts out some funky house fusion with another catchy take on "Rude Buster" from Deltarune, with some supporting tunes from Undertale:

"OK, LOOK. I like the battle theme from Deltarune a lot, okay?! So, after a stream I slept, but then I woke up to work on the remix for 8 hours straight. I had tons of fun! Also, no, it's not Undertale 2.

So, for this remix, I went for an odd mix of like jazz and house. Can we really call this electroswing? I guess we can, sure! And I had a lot of fun doing that weird psychedelic part in the middle. Let me know if you can tell what the melody is. ;)"

I wouldn't call it electroswing, personally, but it's certainly got a ton of staple house elements, including a piano line that takes on a Latin flavor at points, and - more importantly - it's an infectious, fun, & creative ride. So many busters out there... long before Deltarune, there was of course Crude Buster, which sadly became the limply-punned "Two Crude" when it was localized outside Japan. If you've had a dose of a freaky ghost, you of course call the Ghostbusters, and if you're feeling hot, hot, hot it's probably (but not necessarily) the fault of Buster Poindexter. IMDB informs me that adult film "Girl Busters" is the spiritual successor to Passage Thru Pamela (1985), and I feel like that's a title downgrade, really. And Gainax fans can hardly forget the repeated refrain of "Gunbustaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" during the series' eyecatches. But I digress. Flagrantly. Point being, when you subtract the rude & add some funk, this is the resulting buster, and it's one of the better busters I can name. Judges were unanimous but also had some unanimously-shared concerns about production & the ending; prophetik music writes:

"yeah, i agree this is a pretty loud track. the drums are real loud throughout (especially the kick is just huge), and the sidechaining at 1:00 is also really distracting. there's some fun things going on though, between comping over the chord patterns, some of the subtractive stuff around 1:30, and the soloing on the melody at around 2:13."

The piano/epiano breakdown & solo around the second minute is definitely a highlight - great stuff! Other judges picked the nit of the kick drum being overpowering & the ending falling a bit flat, but everyone ultimately agreed that the pros outweigh the cons. To be honest, neither the kick nor the fadeout ending really bothered me, but the sidechaining organ did strike me as.... unusual. Mostly because it pumps more on the downbeat, instead of the far-more-common offbeat, and the inversion feels... strange. Not bad per se, but a little disorienting. At any rate, I love throwback house piano lines like this, and I think Erick did a great job with FX/processing to place them in the mix, plus you've got a thick, deep, & funky bass anchoring everything, and a few curveballs in the structure to keep things interesting. Overall, a solid & thumpin' debut - hope to hear more from Kamex in the future!
