This transformative, heavy-hitting metal take on the SMB3 "Athletic" theme from Mak Eightman (Max V. Kravchenko) is a powerful example of taking a classic, iconically plucky & upbeat Kondo major-key melody... and running it through the (tasteful! musical!) meat grinder, with the end result coming out sinister, abrasive, & all sorts of the type of evil Bowser would happily endorse:
"Almost four years has passed since my last submission. All seemed well until, without warning, my wife descended from space and said me to submit some stuff, because "You have lot of different music. Why you don't represent it? Submit some stuff!"
"I don't want," I said. "Who cares?" she said.
So here I am. Going to submit few tracks because they are "different" (LOL).This mix is kinda crazy. First of all, I tried to combine PAIN and Therion. Second... there is 6 rhythm gtrs at same time.
Timing issues here and there. Production kinda wacky. NO resub. Thanks! SFME!"
On behalf of all of us: Thank you, Mrs. Eightman ;) Or: Большое спасибо, г-жа Кравченко! Someone needed to talk some sense into Mak, and who better than his spouse - this mix fires on all cylinders, and capitalizes on the contrast/juxtaposition of taking such a "happy" theme and making it... not. Production is pretty intense, especially considering the aforementioned SIX rhythm guitars; I couldn't pick them out, but things certainly sound powerful & thick. prophetik music writes:
"hoo boy, that is a meaty intro. i love it. i also love how you kept the same driving, aggressive feel throughout the entire first minute and a half. it really sets the tone for the rest of the mix. the arrangement is clear and consistent throughout. i like the consistent attention to the song's overarching form, allowing time to 'rest' from the faster beat during the last section and bringing in occasional breaks to allow your listeners to reset.
this is a great track. it features some great skill on the guitar and some fun ideas throughout. easy vote for me"
That intro'll grow you some hair in places you didn't think possible :) Very effective alarm clock wake-up track, but also just a creative, unexpected take on a familiar melody which *works* - and those are always fun, either way. DarkeSword writes:
"SUPER IMAGINATIVE! Wow what a take on such a classic and iconic song. Performances are great. This really rocks. Love it."
Shariq's Seal of Approval on a Mario mix is worth considerable non-monetary bonus points in the annals of OCR history, and I agree with his take: great idea, executed well, transformative but easily identifiable. Trifecta accomplished; highly recommended, especially as an example of the latter criteria - here's hoping Mak can be persuaded to release more music, as the whole panel loved this & I think many more will - enjoy!

I agree with Crulex, this would fit very well as the music you hear when avoiding the big DANGER SUN. This was very intense, even for a metal remix! I liked it a lot, it hit those chuggin guitar grooves just right. Two thumbs up!

Sounds like it could be the theme of running for your life while being chased down by THE ACTUAL SUN in Mario 3 during that desert level. So aggressive, probably one of my favorite Mario 3 mixes.

HAHAHAHA Wow I never would have thought of taking this track in a direction like this! Super creative, and well-executed. I especially love the big beefy rythm guitars
