We DID say you can never have enough DKC :) ymK (Kris Camago) follows up a strong Chrono Trigger debut from back in February with this very cool, synth-heavy, energetic-but-chill EDM take on two of the game's many iconic themes:

"I am submitting another remix! I'll call this "Gang-Plank Country." The songs are "Gang-Plank Galleon" and the "DK Country Theme" from Donkey Kong Country.

For this song I used my usual style -- progressive melodic buildup. I also added some trance elements to this remix. For the main leads, I used synths that sounded somewhat similar to the original songs to give a sense of nostalgia.

My next goal is to make a VG remix album and I hope to have that done by the end of the year.

I hope you guys enjoy it! Thanks for your consideration!"

"Progressive melodic buildup" is right - there are extended portions of this mix where drums are minimal to nonexistent, and I'm a huge fan of the exposed, delicate, & subtle synth textures Kris is painting with, here - the sparse soundscape lets you appreciate every tweaked envelope & modulated attack. Most of the synths are cleaner & less aggressive than in many other EDM genres, but they're layered & switched between in a way that maintains energy and offers enough nuance to keep things interesting & moving; Liontamer writes:

"I love the contrast of posting this one back-to-back with Sir_NutS's huge and heavy take on "Fear Factory," as ymK really shows up and shows out with this energetic yet comparatively low-key take on "Gang-Plank Galleon" that allows you to cruise and relax to an evolving groove. Props to Kris in particular for his creative background writing once the track gradually built up and increased in complexity; when elements eventually keep stacking up by 1:53, I encourage listeners not to neglect all of the cool yet subtle activity going on underneath the melody. Both tracks succeed in filtering the fear and anxiety out of their respective themes and demonstrating unique electronic approaches to making them fun. :-)"

Well said, especially the observation about underlying detail; in a genre that kinda relies on buildup & release of kinetic energy, having that sonic depth makes the sparser parts more interesting, and really drives it home later, when there are multiple layers firing simultaneously. Absolutely delivering on the concept & featuring some superb synthwork, this is an excellent follow-up to Kris's first mix & another great DKC mix that's easy to love!

I really enjoyed the percussion in this, the general variance of the sounds and groove really make this a treat to listen to. great interpretation of the theme(s) as well! :)

I think Taucer hit the nail on the head. This has the dark, driven feel of a boss fight, but done in such a smooth, almost relaxing way and that makes it super interesting. It's cool to hear a unique take on a song that's usually in your face and aggressive. Love it.

Great track, would love to see more of this, though I'm unfamiliar with the game. ?

You know, I think my favorite thing about this mix, the thing that most impresses me, is the restraint.

The super-obvious choice when doing an EDM arrangement of a track like this, with its dark driving rythms, would be to make something, loud, heavy, and hard-hitting. But this takes it in a totally different direction, while still keeping that dark feel and driving rhythm. Mellow, chill, restrained. It's really refreshing, and works extremely well!
