MkVaff (Mike Vafeas) sends us a slightly-chilled EDM take on Mega Man 9's "Magma Man":
"For a series I absolutely love so much for its music, I've generally ALWAYS been pretty terrible at the Mega Man games. I think I used to be better at them as a teenager, but in all my life I don't think I've ever had the patience to ever complete any of the games from start to finish.
That being said, I still enjoy playing through what I can of the games, even if I just keep switching levels until I get frustrated by too many deaths and quit. The excitement of listening to each new level theme is just as much of a draw for playing the games as playing through the levels themselves for me!
Anyway, I played Mega Man 9 back when it first came out in the late 2000's, but wasn't really working on a lot of music then. So, when I started figuring out what songs I wanted to cover more recently, I listened to some of the soundtracks I completely missed since my more prolific remixing days and the later MM games were all on that list.
As with most MM music, the upbeat tempo works perfectly for some of the frantic action of the game, but I wanted to slow it down and give it more of a chill dance groove and give the fantastic melody of the Magma Man theme a little more room to breathe.
Really enjoyed working on this one. Hope y'all enjoy!"
Straightforward, rock-solid EDM here - few surprises, sure, but the bones are good and I like the little breath/exhale percussive effect, along with the vox-style lead. It's *almost* a tropical house vibe, and I think pushing more in that direction would have allowed an acoustic guitar or a couple elements to mix things up, but at a few hairs over three minutes, nothing overstays its welcome. Liontamer evaluated:
"A bread-and-butter example of a working genre transformation that clicks with the arrangement Standards. MkVaff's tempo is fixed here, so beyond the genre adaptation to the laid-back 90s dance groove, the development of the piece mostly comes from the gradual but continuous textural build-up from measure to measure. The resolution should have been more substantive, IMO, but trailed off nicely with the final note in a way that at least hits a solid loop point. When listening to this, be sure to compare the ending verse's density to the opening and you'll really notice the different lines accumulate over the 3 minutes, but that dynamic contrast can slip past you when just casually listening through. Smooth groove from an O.G. If it wasn't already obvious, Mike should be allowed to take his stab at an official Streets of Rage soundtrack, BTW. :-P"
What he said :) While the mix title might suggest a more aggressive/infectious groove, this is relatively laid back, classic MkVaff dance EDM, and it made me smile. Enjoy!

This is remarkably chill for how much energy it has. I want to create a musical category for remixes like this and call it "Energetically chill." Very good job on this :)

I love the laid back feel. It really helps accentuate the groove that you made. This is one of my favorite stage themes from 9, and this remix is right up there with the best Mega Man remixes.
