Arranging the music of one song...
"Dr. Wily Stage 1"
Primary Game: Mega Man 2 (Capcom , 1988, NES), music by Manami Matsumae, Takashi TateishiPosted 2022-03-23, evaluated by the judges panel
Newcomer The Geeky Guitarist (Ricardo Basora) gives us a completely new spin on "Dr. Wily Stage 1" with this uptempo Latin/fusion jazz celebration:
"Here's some Mega Man II! :-D Good jazz is what it's all about. 8-) Thank you so much!"
I've been previously informed that, contrary to Ricardo's statement, the hokey pokey is in fact what it's all about, but whether you're putting your left foot in or your right, you'll definitely be shaking it all about, as this mix is FAST. Speedy, crunchy natural drums intro us in before both guitar and piano accompaniment enter, the latter with a bouncy, frenetic (but not chaotic) energy. Ricardo does eventually dial it back for some rather smooth original soloing, but the majority of the mix is firing on all cylinders - repetitive stress injuries for all! Liontamer writes:
"Great formula of a spirited and personalized cover (:06) interspersed with a wholly original section (:54) before moving back to the treatment of the source tune for the rest of the way (1:42).
I loved focusing in on the drumwork. Wish the bassline cut through a little more with a sharper and more distinct sound, because I dug the writing so much.
Awesome, polished stuff, Ricardo; welcome aboard!"
It's a heck of a groove, bustling with energy & life, the type of beat that could, in lesser hands, result in a rhythmic trainwreck, but Mr. Basora's got things under control. prophetik music adds:
"wow, this is really fun! this kind of uptempo jazz track can be really hard to nail, but you've done a great job combining the melodic writing on the guitar (great tone throughout!) with some clever time changes and busy background parts. this is an obvious pass for me."
Judges were indeed unanimous, and while some had minor mixdown suggestions, everyone was unilaterally feeling the infectious, creative, & invigorating rhythmic shifts and flavor Ricardo has brought to a familiar favorite. Unique, super-energetic stuff - a memorable debut from The Geeky Guitarist, hope to hear more in the future!

I think Mariachi Entertainment System did this song better because some trumpet goes well with this track but I really like the improv-ing at the 1 minute mark
