Just in time for this week's release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Hy Bound returns to the site for his first new contribution in fifteen years -- and we're all thrilled to have his synthy, ephemeral take on "Secret of the Deep Sea" from the original PlayStation title released in 1997. This one's a more relaxed style than two of his previous contributions to the site, both from Final Fantasy IV: Echoes of Betrayal, Light of Redemption. Hy Bound describes this arrangement as "a love letter to Vangelis and (ironically) my OB-6, which makes up about 80% of the synth sounds."
Just as Rebirth is advertising a more open space in which to adventure, this ReMix feels spacious from the jump, with a warm synth ambiance immediately bringing us into the 1990s spirit of the original Final Fantasy VII, during a time when game audio timbre was still an ongoing experiment with technology. The synth pads give way to a floating topic where the electronic piano and sampled strings just feel right for those of us old enough to conjure the mid-'90s into our minds. Emunator noted that the "arrangement is very dynamic despite a source that doesn't have much in the way of a dynamic curve at all," which helps this take feel like we're eventually headed somewhere as we bob along in this sonic ocean.
Right as the track fades away -- presumably as we float away from the imagined source of the chill vibes Hy Bound has provided for us all -- prophetik music caught that there's just a glimpse of the Jenova theme, a warning of something on the horizon. It feels perfectly fitting for a week when many are waiting for one of the marquee releases of the year!

This source is probably my least favorite on the entire OST. That said, I love it when people take something I dislike and transform it into something more and something I enjoy.
I'm a sucker for the genre, and the piano here fits very well. The semi-synthwave-cinematic feel fits the source very well and I would not have imagined the direction this went in. Glad to see some work from Hy Bound after all these years!
