SEPTEMBER IS FLOOD MONTH!! We hereby declare that henceforth September will be a month of great mixfloodage & copious amounts of amazing FREE game ReMixes for all!! We're kicking things off with a long-overdue second flood of excellent arrangements from Super Mario 64: Portrait of a Plumber, and we'll have ANOTHER FLOOD of new, non-album material comin' up for you EARLY next week!! We think this'll be a great way to catch up with our (in)famous queue while also grouping together mixes by some cool themes (you'll see...), and hopefully you'll agree! First up in our SM64 flood is Sole Signal with the red coin half of his red/blue duo. While we posted "Grab the Blue Coin!" back when the album debuted, we were actually SUPPOSED to have posted this slower, downtempo groove instead; Justin had a bit of musical color-blindness and mixed up his coins :) It ultimately doesn't matter, though, because both mixes are great, although I do I have a slight preference for this more relaxed jam - Greg writes:
"This track represents nostalgia in song form for me: my favorite game of all time, and one of my favorite levels. This track was completed over about two weeks of work after I decided that I wanted to try a different spin on this source, unique from its counterpart "Grab the Blue Coin!" which is also on the project. Was trying to create a chill downtempo groove, with a focus on bass and the breakbeat."
Mission accomplished! Album director Nutritious writes:
"Actually completed far later than its "Blue Coin" sister mix, this is Greg's more laid-back take on the "Cave Dungeon" theme. It features a down-tempo electronic style with some excellent synth tricks and a killer bassline. This really shows how Greg's musical style and abilities have evolved over time and is one of my favorite tracks on the album. Great stuff."
Speedier, darting staccato string lines pepper a tense but still deliberate groove that layers acoustic guitar, synths, and atmospheric FX over a vintage beat & a deep, dirty electric bass. It's a really clear blend of textures that has a lot of depth but also a lot of definition, and Greg keeps things moving primarily via additive/subtractive means, introducing some additional & more active ingredients towards the end to create some contrast. Slick & cool while still bearing some teeth with an undertone of menace, this ReMix from SS was yet another highlight from PoaP!

I've always loved the misty cave vibe SM64 gave the old underground theme, and to hear it taken in this downtempo'ed, beat heavy way. Has a little bit of mystery feeling in the undertones while the beat keeps everything exciting, especially later on in the ReMix. I thought that was cool and makes me enjoy this ReMix just as much, if not more, than the blue coin version. Great job, Sole Signal.

I've got to echo the sentiments on this bone-rattling bass, a perfect way to enhance the mystery and suave already present in the source. I'm so glad you made that moody guitar happen, too; what a combo!

Shit, DAT BASS IS SO GREAT. I really enjoyed this take on original Undergtound BGM. Though, this mix is different from Greg's more upbeat mix of the same tune, still it's as awesome as the blue one

DAMN, this is smooth! The bass is sooooo rich. Really cool granular and reverse effects. Amazing detail, too. Loving the occasional cello and bass pizzicato. I actually think this is better than the Blue Coin mix, so I'm glad you did this in addition to it!
