Sir_NutS (Paul Michael Molina) releases Patrick Bateman all over this psytrance arrangement of another Konami/MSX gem, as our flood of new and/or obscure games continues:
"This is a psytrance ReMix of Konami's Treasure of Uşas stage 5 theme, for the MSX. This ReMix was done for PRC, and retouched after the original submission. It's been a long time since I did a song in this style, but it's always a blast creating all the psychedelic sounds. This genre isn't everybody's cup of tea, and I'm aware of that, but it's a genre I love listening to and creating.
This is my second psytrance submission, and while my earlier sub leaned more towards Juno Reactor's style of psytrance, this is very Infected Mushroom-inspired, as in, a more "pure" psytrance rendition, down to the song structure and sounds. As always, I have a lot of fun crafting these complex sounds and this song was no exception.
I never played this game, but classic Konami titles always had good music. The original seemed a bit happy for this style at first, but the details and modifications I made created the dark atmosphere that, IMO, changed the original mood of the melody, making it more tense, frantic, and dark. Making it perfect for the genre in the end. I hope you guys enjoy it. Even though I know this kind of music is not for everyone, it's one of my favorite electronica genres."
Nice intro percolating/repeating elements before the kick shows up and some neat ping-ponging synth squiggles come in, along with the American Psycho refrain. I wasn't exactly sure how well this genre suited the source, but in hearing this again a couple months later, I'm more persuaded; it's still a little peppier & more major-key than I'm used to hearing for psytrance, but the production is fun, there's good energy, things develop, and the melody still has a certain science-fiction angle to it that works well enough. As Flexstyle writes:
"aww hellz yes, we need more Psy on OCR! Definitely got some cool squelchy synth stuff going on. I'm hearing enough source usage to be happy, the production is good enough...I could nitpick, but at this point, what's the use anyways?"
Indeed; we JUST saw Mr. Molina lay down some mean Sonic glitch funk, so it's also just cool to see the pivot in terms of genre & source popularity. This is definitely more esoteric territory that won't be quite as accessible, but which executes an interesting genre approach on a plucky enough source tune, galvanzing old-school Konami melodies with psycho power, synth, & Christian Bale!

This would have made one hell of a club hit in the 90's, I think. I used to listen to a lot of music like this a long time ago, fun stuff. Aggressive, but with a hell of a beat and lots of creepy vocalizations by Bateman. Terrific psytrance in every sense, I could really get used to hearing this more often again. Great ReMix, man!

It definitely is nice to hear psy-trance around here (or perhaps I’m not looking hard enough?). It’s really good, and makes your head want to pulse to the rhythm. The melody strikes me as a little fun, but then you get to the bridges, and you’re definitely in for a wild ride. Loved how the vocals were used.

I’ve never actually heard of psytrance, but then again, a good friend of mine describes me as a “deprived child” when it comes to a lot of music. Plus I’ve never really studied up on the seemingly endless variations of electronic music. It’s interesting, though, and regardless of the genre, you’ve done well with this remix. The zingy synths weave in and around the percussion with precision and flair, and it's an enjoyable remix to listen to. Excellent stuff!

Ha can't beat a bit of psy-trance, I definitely see the Infected Mushroom influence but you've made it your own
It's just occured to me, I wonder why much games (or any?) have never used psy-trance before, especially shooters as it's so upbeat and driving. Would suit arcade shmups so well.

Very cool rendition of a classic MSX game song I grew up with (this might have actually been the very first game I owned!). IIRC I actually picked this source for PRC, great to see it posted!
I've heard a number of remixes of this source, but never one in this genre. Love me some psytrance, and combined with a cool source track and a dose of nostalgia, what's not to like?
Next mission: getting more MSX tracks on OCR!
