We were deeply saddened today to learn of the death of Prince; amazing composer, impeccable performer, and just a singular musical mind. While his career spans multiple decades, for many of us he is primarily & indelibly associated with the eighties; this time-traveling synth-pop/funk Chrono Trigger ReMix from HyperDuck SoundWorks is the type of fun & unapologetically funky mix we think the Purple One would have dug. Chris Geehan writes:
"A good friend of mine, Randy Yasenchak of Elder Geek, came to me about a project he was putting together, Twenty-Five Games for My Son, a YouTube series about 25 games he wanted his son to know about as he grew up, games that shaped Randy's childhood and early adulthood. I thought it was quite endearing and a beautiful message to extend onto his son, and, having loved Chrono Trigger, I couldn't resist to jump in regardless.
I was in the midst of writing music for Cosmic Star Heroine, an RPG game by Zeboyd Games, and really, vintage, lo-fi, 80s, 90s, all of these styles were running through my head and out my fingers into the soundtrack, so I transferred a bit of that energy into this (and the other) remix I did. I wanted to do a unique and appreciative spin on how it was done. Remixing such an iconic soundtrack, and such an iconic song, while making sure to do the original music justice, is quite scary! It's always scary, which is why I don't do it often, but by the end of this, I was relieved, and hopefully others enjoy it as well, a little 80s flavour with a bit of our own zaniness in there. If not, ENJOY ANYWAY!"
Emunator sums things up incredibly well:
"HyperDuck really know their stuff - the 180-degree stylistic leap between their previously posted submission and this remix demonstrates incredible versatility and competency with their craft. I'm finding myself captivated by the throwback sound pallet utilized here as well as the lively modulations to a classic Chrono Trigger tune. The slick mixing work really ties it all together, it makes me happy when such a fun, off-the-wall concept like this ALSO gets the royal production treatment. :)"
It's a fun, sassy, & well-crafted arrangement, and I think we could all use a bit of that right now. Great work from HyperDuck which channels an era that was defined by artistic titans our world is starting to lose, and who will be sorely missed & remembered through their works.

I haven't been here for a while.... a long while. Partly due to work, partly due to being in grad school, but I told myself that one day, I'd get back into OCR'ing. I think you just did it for me with this. ABSOLUTELY EPIC. You have shown me that even the most overplayed theme can have fresh life breathed into it with a little extra spice. You sir, get the playing outside the music box award (sounds cooler than thinking outside the box).
WELL DONE!!! Badass. Just plain badass.
Did I mention I love this? Okay. Just checking.

Damn this is insanely cool. 80's vibe nailed perfectly.
I didn't dig the chord at 1:03 sadly but the lead that comes after makes up for it. The synth/sax (both?) is so good.
If you allow some nitpicking, I didn't like the synth solo at the fade-out. Way too much arpeggios and no melody. Unfitting for such a stylish song!
80's should be added to the tags. There are few remixes in that style (I remember the JENOVA one) but they're damn good.

Thanks very much everybody for the extremely kind words, the remix meant a lot to me - i didn't want to do it if I couldn't do it right, and I'm just glad others are enjoying it as much as I enjoyed making it, cheers!

Really nicely done mix - captures the feel of the 80's nicely while staying true to the source material. Bravo!

Man, this theme has been remixed so many times, but this one is just really different from any other remixes of this theme on OCR. Mad props to HDSW for the effort here! Especially digging the part @ 2:30

I have always had a interest in the 80s style of music. It's sort
of a mashup of different styles and instruments that you would
think may not work out well, but yet it does. Within the first
(about) five seconds into this song I instantly got that 80s
music vibe. Even though I was born in the 90s and enjoy
Orchestral music as my favorite type, there is something about a
80s synth that you just can't beat (or not dance to it's beat).
And when you have multiple synths, it's even more interesting and
fun. This song not only does 80s music (or what much of common
day pop culture thinks 80s music is, like Kung Fury Ha ha ha),
but also does the original song from the Chrono Trigger game
(same name the game has but is the song) incredible
justice.
It's not everyday I could get down and boogie
to a video game song that is remixed, but throw that 80s feel and
vibe into it and you might have my Moon Walking like good ol'
Michael Jackson. Great job on this classic song, and may your
Wings of Time carry you far into your future of success.

Great writeup for a great mix. I'm only now coming to appreciate how much knowing the context of a song's submission really adds to its enjoyment, especially as in cases like this, where it represents a gestalt fusion of nostalgia, sentiment, and passion. Funky, fresh, satisfyingly slick but also still 'grainy' (dat lo-fi goodness).

I'm no music master, but you crushed all the stated goals of the writeup. Man, this feels like it walked right out of the mid-to-late 80's and plopped down right on my computer. Absolutely enjoyable and fun. Super props for 2:15-2:30; would have been totally legit to end the song there if you wanted. Loved it!
